Amsterdam reports the Frankfurter Zeitung discusses peace proposals. It says Germany seeks to avoid evasive replies and notes divergent initial views while oral explanations may clarify. It argues German aims include reestablishing international conventions for peace and avoiding unilateral disarmament with mutual reductions possible.
Under the Conway Shakespeare Club, a larger Christmas tree with candy and an orange for each of Conway's 700 children under 10 will be placed on the public square Saturday night. A program will be held. it marks the second annual municipal Christmas tree event.
Conway on December 1 reports plans for a new women’s auxiliary to the Conway Commercial Club to be organized Tuesday afternoon. It would assume duties formerly handled by the Conway School and Civic Club, which disbanded about a month ago. Instructed to act promptly with advertising.
In Verdun region French forces press gains from yesterday while Berlin concedes Bezonvaux and nearby woods lost after a violent clash. British raids near Ransart and southwest of Wytschaete secure footholds. Germans bombard Bezonvaux and Chambrette positions without breaking through. North of the Ancre British assaults are repelled.
A Gazette excerpt reports a clash when Dr A S Buchanan asked a tramp to work. The tramp’s allies reply via a letter from the “President” of the Sons of Rest Good Government Association, demanding an apology and asserting the group’s aim is pleasure, not slavery. The letter invokes Lincoln and cautions reform.
The Rev L H Holt formerly of Malvern's Second Baptist church has accepted a call to Hampton and departed today. During his pastorate here the new Second Baptist church was constructed.
Malvern December 17 Deputy Sheriff Luke Steel of Prescott arrested Lonnie Lee a Black inmate who escaped Nevada County jail. Night Marshal Billie Roberson captured the fugitive and handed him to the deputy for custody.
Dec 17 plan called for March events between the high schools of Okolona and Glenwood. The program includes a debate, expression and spelling contests, with events held in both towns.
An old advertisement promotes Dr King's New Life Pills as a mild laxative to correct constipation and dull skin. It claims a full non-griping movement by morning and urges readers to buy a bottle at druggists for 25 cents.
The University of Arkansas College of Agriculture announces a week of Farmers Week January 2 to 7 with instructive practical sessions for farmers. The Home Makers Course runs January 2 to 7 for all state women, followed by the Annual Short Course January 8 to February 3 for farmers and their sons with tracks in Cotton Classing Production and Marketing and crops and soils. Livestock and dairying work peaks January 22 to 27, and January 20 to February 3 focuses on fruit production.
