Secretary Cortelyou is confined to bed with a severe attack of grip and will stay home for at least a week. Assistant Secretary Edwards will act in the department during his absence. Secretary Metcalf of the navy also ill with grip after returning from Norfolk with the President and party.
12 Inches of snow blanketed Van Buren and nearby areas as of December 17, ranking among the heaviest storms in years. Farmers with strawberry fields and peach orchards praise the heavy fall for its potential to boost fruit crops. Christmas shopping urged with local ads offering T. B. Bryan gifts for loved ones.
Little Rock to bolster security with 35 extra patrolmen and 5 plain clothes officers before year’s end. Detectives will meet trains and turn back suspicious characters to keep the city safe during the holiday season.
May be an extra session of the Arkansas legislature discussed by state officials in Little Rock. They expect a call after January 18 if opposition remains, warning it could exhaust the treasury and delay salaries and state work. Acting Governor X. O. Pindall would become governor if called.
Special to the News. Little Rock December 18 Rufus G McDaniel of Arkalphia takes over as corporation clerk in the secretary of State's office succeeding E L McHaney. State Treasurer Jas L Gates appoints H D Greene as chief clerk to replace deceased J C Massey with Dr W M McCulley succeeding Greene as receipt clerk.
The Washington Star reports that President may force Frank W. Hitchcock to resign as first assistant postmaster general. It claims Hitchcock built a strong political machine across the South aimed at the president’s renomination, though covert aims point toward Cortelyou.
Washington December 16. Already two doubtful states are added to Taft vote by President's pledge not to run. Oregon and South Dakota are confined to Taft.
