Train No. 3 rear ended by a fast freight near Marshall Texas at 3 30 this morning. Mail clerks Fred Powell and Clide Buchanan were injured in the wreck with Powell suffering a general shock and Buchanan a back injury. One man was killed and several others injured. Powell and Buchanan were taken to their homes in Prescott where they expect to be confined for a few weeks.
Captain R M Coffee of Hope and Major E L Compere were involved in a dangerous boarding incident when a moving train started to depart Prescott. Compere clung to a car door, then Coffee sprinted to his aid and swung Compere into an open door, narrowly avoiding serious injury.
A vestibule rider came within moments of being struck as it stood too close to a baggage truck near a Pullman car. The incident prompted warnings to stay clear of active loading zones.
The plan to move the vessel south this fall faced many setbacks as weather growing unpropitious blocked the start. Delays accumulated, delaying the voyage beyond initial schedules.
Hot Springs Dec 11 A Riggs financed a New York expedition that built a large balloon and conducted a trial flight but the airship was wrecked in a storm while awaiting another test. He plans to return to New York for a thorough trial and then fly back to Arkansas once the airworthy qualities are shown. Several small accidents helped push the earlier failure.
Builders and dealers report a strong, optimistic outlook for Arkansas in the coming year. Contractors anticipate brisk activity, with many out-of-state suppliers sending reps to seek business as competition tightens. The season is expected to start in early February, though activity has already begun in parts of the state.
