State Mineralogist John T Fuller released results of a comprehensive survey of Arkansas manganese. The Batesville area in Independence and Sharp counties covers about 150 square miles and supplies more than ten percent of US ore. Arkansas ranked third with 49 876 tons from 1838 to 1913, with little mining 1903 to 1918. From 1910 to 1913 output totaled 18 189 tons valued at 26 901 dollars, most in 1918. Current buyers visit Batesville to acquire properties, reflecting wartime demand and foreign competition. Fuller links industry profitability to operator skill and foreign imports.
