President Wilson began his journey to the peace conference leaving Washington on a special train for New York. He will board the transport George Washington with his party, voyage across the Atlantic, and head to a French port likely Brest for about six weeks abroad.
President Wilson plans to confer with Premiers Lloyd George Clemenceau and Orlando and possibly King Albert of Belgium to discuss key peace treaty points. He will visit England Italy France and perhaps Brussels and tour battlefields in France. Tumulty will remain in Washington guiding White House business and communicating by cable. At the station the president and Mrs. Wilson were cheered as soldiers and sailors formed a human lane.
A notice announces a regular quarterly examination for teachers at the court house from December 11 to 20, 1918. It lists C. M. Hirst as Company Examiner and includes a wanted ad for ten good time makers at Clark Co. Lumber Co. in Smithton, Arkansas, with the post marked 29w2.
Reports from Santiago indicate the United States may urge Chile to cede Tacna to Peru and Arica to Bolivia while Chile mobilizes its army to quell labor unrest. Peru denies mobilizing. Little Rock December 4 The regular biennial election on November 5 yielded the smallest state vote in generations with 78 726 cast for J L Bond as superintendent of public instruction. In 1910 total votes for governor were 150 578.
Washington Dec 3 Senate debate centered on President Wilsons trip to Europe Republican Senator Sherman urged declaring the presidency vacant upon his departure and succession for Vice President Marshall while Democrat Senator Williams defended the voyage noting prior presidents Taft and Roosevelt also traveled abroad House Republican Leader Mann urged unity in supporting the presidents mission and urged no partisan interference The debate lasted about two hours with spectators sometimes applauding and the Sherman resolution postponed pending table consideration.
