Paris dispatch reports Allied forces along the Vesle and near the Marne under heavy German bombardment. American troops crossed the Vesle and battled two German counterattacks while French and American lines advanced west of Baroches. Casualties and prisoners were noted as the Germans retreated toward Braisne.
New York Aug 7 A sharp drop in cotton prices ranged 86 to 140 points as better weather and crop news mixed with expectations of increased new crop offerings. The market steadied late but then fell on favorable weekly crop data and rain in Texas with reports of improving drought conditions. spot cotton held middling at 11.45 cents. A separate notice reports a found child’s black patent leather shipper between Boughton and Prescott. hose found, owner to claim at office.
The east and west highways along foothills north of the river form tor aces to the Aisne as the jet wing arrives just before 8 am. Artilleries on both sides duel over captured positions while German small arms resist. In the hour, French and American positions are made more secure.
London reports Gen Foeh countered a German land offensive, while Lloyd George claims July American troop arrivals reach 45,000 and total Allied manpower surpasses 6.25 million. He says German hopes fade as harvest falters, with disillusion growing among German and ally publics. The House adjourns until Oct 15 amid war talks.
British troops advanced along a nearly five mile front between the Lane and Clarence River in the Lys sector, penetrating 1 000 yards. They repelled German counterattacks on Braye Corbier road and gained prisoners, with additional gains from old trenches and a rush on a German post north ofux Berquin. Artillery activity was noted east of Robey and in the Merville and Dickebusch sectors.
From Logan county reports a clash occurred between the sheriff's posse and a gang of draft resisters hiding in the mountains. One posse member was killed and one resister was captured. Also offered for sale a Ford touring car in good condition by E. M. Frisby.
