Local couple escape blaze in Coatesville hotel
A $500000 fire in downtown Coatesville trapped 50 guests in a six building complex. Pottstown couple Mr and Mrs Alan J Hartman fled from a third floor hotel room with only a robe. The blaze began in the basement of Newberry store and the Grand Hotel building suffered major damage. The couple, uninsured, lost clothes jewels and household goods since their five year marriage. Fire chief Wesley Dougherty said water pumped from the basement and that the cause would be known today. A police officer suffered bruises but no serious injury.

Police Ordered to Nab Speeders on West High Street

Taurhead announced strict enforcement of the speed limit on West High Street from the borough line to Manatawny street with more frequent patrols. Sgt. Daniel J. Man killed by hunting companion in accidental shooting
Philadelphia man Charles H. Cardon, 23, a Temple University student, died after a 22 caliber rifle fired by George A. Gray misaligned during a hunting outing on Snyder road near Upper Perkiomen Valley park. The incident occurred in Upper Frederick township, Montgomery county, with Cardon succumbing at Grand View hospital. Gray and another man, Winfield Lederer Jr., were present. Police called the death an accident. coroner’s inquiry will be held in Bucks county where the death is recorded. Directors of Pottstown's Community Chest meet at noon tomorrow in the Howard Johnson to consider an early 1948 drive to raise the balance toward the 116,971 goal.
