Letter from Will Daubenberger in San Antonio May 30 1917
A long, first person letter from Will Daubenberger of the 5th Aero Squadron in South Antonio Texas dated May 30 1917. He describes Decoration Day heat about 100 degrees and fine weather with brief rain. He writes of receiving mail and candy, assembling aero planes for two weeks, and that only commissioned officers fly. He notes a goal of ten thousand aviators by 1918, possible training in France, and mentions meals, locally grown vegetables, and San Antonio as a modern city with a river and palm lined banks. He complains of heat and idleness, asks Ruth to wake early, and closes with personal reflections. The end mentions A S Burdick aiding ex President Taft at Mason City and Gov Harding’s commencement address in Fayette.
