Town forest returned to Newington after decades of Allied land seizure
The Pease Development Authority will deed 69 acres of Newington town forest back to the town, with a ceremony at 9 a.m. on September 13 on Arboretum Drive. The forest, established in 1710 and on the National Historic Registry, was largely taken when the Air Force built a base in 1952 and only 10 acres remained beyond the fence after 1991. Communities leaders and Selectman Jack O’Reilly describe decades of negotiations with PDA, state agencies, and lawyers as the forest returns to public ownership.
