In Van Buren Maine a blaze at the Bosse home killed Peter and Gustave Bosse both four and forced the parents to flee with six other children to the roof of the piazza. The fire started from a stove in the living room and firefighters or neighbors aided in rescue.
An early morning blaze swept the Turks Head Coal Co yard and a cargo boat Lake Giltaden carrying 1050 tons of sulphur for Rumford Chemical Co. Seven crew members jumped into the Providence River. Firemen battled the flames as the Sulphur bins and coal pocket roof burned. By 11 20 am the blaze was declared under control though a 115 foot hoisting tower collapsed into the burning boat. Narrow escapes marked the incident.
A fierce weekend storm drenched New Hampshire with record snow and rainfall. Northern counties faced impassable highways after a 20 inch snow at Lost River while 5 to 10 inches fell elsewhere. Dozens of autos were stranded and drivers abandoned vehicles. Snowplows worked to clear the North Country as roads became perilously slick.
A fierce northeastern storm battered Hampton Beach on Saturday causing a breakwater breach between Bradford and Atlantic. Workers noted two other undermined jetties and significant damage to White Island area and southern summer properties. About 800 visitors toured the site, assessing the wrecked sections and rent losses along the coast.
Berlin reports the German minister in Rio de Janeiro was instructed to demand satisfaction and damages for German victims among 27 killed when the Hamburg liner Baden was fired upon near Rio de Janeiro harbor during the uprising. The Brazilian government promised punishment for the rogue shooter, as Germany signals stance on the revolutionary regime by addressing the Baden incident.
Rochester pilots Stanley Boynton an 18 year old from Maite aims to beat the junior transcontinental record. He landed at the municipal airport at 2 54 8 p m after flying from Rockland Maine started 5 45 p m. The current junior record is just over 27 hours held by Robert Buck of New Jersey. Also noted are births at The Clark Maternity Home with a daughter to the Kenrick family of Rye and a son to the Daigh family of Bartlett Street.
Navy Day crowds thronged Portsmouth Navy Yard to tour submarines and shops. Rear Admiral Phelps welcomed visitors who viewed the Peace Conference Building relics, hospital facilities, and the V-5 and V-6 submarines under final trials.
