The city markets the Red Feather as a badge of support for the Community Chest. Donors fund seven agencies including Salvation Army YWCA Boy Scouts YMCA Family Welfare Association District Nursing Association and Girl Scouts to aid hunger sickness homelessness and related needs.
Washington dispatch reports the Wake Island meeting between President Truman and Gen. MacArthur stirred heat but offered little light on Formosa. Truman stated there was no disagreement on Formosa, noting the issue was added five weeks ago and that Formosa remains a UN concern. Senator Knowland demanded details about an anonymous Pentagon briefing claiming an agreement on Formosa. Pace and Bradley declined to comment.

Edna St Vincent Millay, 58, Pulitzer prize winning poet, died of a heart attack after editing proofs overnight. Her body was found at the foot of a stair in her East Hill home by caretaker James Pinnie. She had lived alone since her husband Eugen Milosevain’s death about a year earlier.

State Public Service Commission held a day long hearing on Hampton Water Company's water service for Hampton Beach. Samuel J. Bargh of Islington Mass. and Commission Chair Edgar H. Hunter led discussions with Allen M. Symonds of the company. A plan was promised within a week with the commission's engineer proposing improvements and the company considering the plan before a summer season deadline. Symonds acknowledged past inadequacy of service and the need for new infrastructure, while Hunter questioned whether rate increases accompany improvements.
