Beef prices drive rise in April CPI record

A Labor Department report shows beef prices jumped 6.6 percent in April, lifting overall consumer prices 0.9 percent for the month and pushing the annual inflation rate for the past three months to 10 percent. Food costs as a group rose 1.8 percent, with fresh vegetables up 9.7 percent led by lettuce, while housing costs and energy also posted sharp gains.

Supreme Court rules police may search newspaper offices

The Supreme Court ruled 5-3 that police may search a newspaper office for evidence even if none of the employees is involved, reversing lower courts. The decision says warrants may be issued when there is reasonable cause to believe the sought items are on the property, and does not require the owner to be a crime suspect. Justice White wrote that safeguards exist against abuses, while a dissent argued limits should be stronger.
