The Associated Press reports a record surge of tornadoes over Memorial Day weekend across the Midwest and South killing at least 48 people in eleven states from Oklahoma to Florida. Destruction spans several small towns as heavy rains and floods compound losses for farmers in the lower Mississippi Valley amid widespread damage and delayed crops.
In Brussels the United States and 12 NATO allies urged Britain and Ireland to exercise the utmost restraint in the cold war. The appeal came during a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, comprising the United States Britain Iceland and the 12 other NATO members.

London AP reports Prime Minister Edward Heath’s government still denies further ministers’ involvement in a sex scandal despite Sunday papers naming a third, and possibly a fourth, minister linked to call girls. Scotland Yard found no evidence to support wider involvement as Heath travels in West Germany.
Rain washed out the Memorial Day parade in downtown Portsmouth yet a brief observance took place with veterans Air Force and Marine contingents under the High Hanover parking lot. Governor Thomson spoke in seacoast towns, noting national reverence for liberty and those who served.
U S Representative Louis C Wyman announces more than 11 million dollars in Public Law 874 funds allocated to 12 southeastern New Hampshire school districts to aid districts educating children of federal personnel. Districts include Portsmouth Oyster River Durham Exeter Greenland and others. Remaining eligible districts will receive payments before June 30 as education officials certify eligibility.
Sen. Thomas J. McIntyre of New Hampshire defended Sen. Norris Cotton after Cotton joined in a unanimous Appropriations Committee vote to cut bombing funds for Cambodia. McIntyre called Cotton nonpartisan and frustrated by endless warfare, noting praise from both parties and denouncing accusations of communist influence.
