An open air meeting at Greenland Sunday afternoon at 4 30 features the People's Baptist Church choir and the Dammett piano accordion orchestra with instrumental talent. Rev Newton T Anderson of the Greenland Federated Church will deliver the Gospel message. The event is held at the canning factory on the Portsmouth road near the railway depot.
President Roosevelt urged Congress to act quickly on oil control legislation and proposed adding it to the pending industrial supervision bill. In a letter to Vice President Garner and Speaker Rainey, he called for a two year authority for Secretary Ickes to fix prices hours of labor and restrict production to meet demand, as outlined in Rep. Marland of Oklahoma's bill.
Samuel Seabury, chief counsel in the Hofstadter inquiry, said he would not run as a fusion candidate for mayor of New York City. He asserted he does not want to capitalize on Walker administration results and urged the city ticket to choose the best qualified citizens. He added that Tammany Hall can be beaten under current circumstances, and believes the city can prevail.
Boston reports President Roosevelts authorization of pay increases for two reforestation groups. One group to $45 a month and another to $36, disclosed by Robert Fechner, head of the program, who resides in Quincy. The current rate is $30.
May 20 reports show the House Ways and Means Committee weighing higher gasoline levies to fund a $3.3 billion public works bond program. Proposals would allow suspension if prohibition repeal passes, with corporate stock dividends also affected. Automatic tax drops may be urged if Volstead repeal enables revenue to cover costs, while sales tax is sidelined. The bond issue aims to finance a vast construction program and employment.
Five Greater Lawrence mills announced wage increases for about 40,000 employees, effective next Monday. American Woolen, Pacific, Arlington, Monomac, and Seldon mills reported rises, with varied amounts, affecting worsted, print work, and rayon divisions. Wood Worsted Mills spokesman Walter F. Lamont confirmed the plan.
Geneva May 20 Bolivia today rejected the League of Nations council recommendation for settling the Chaco Territory dispute with Paraguay. Bolivian delegates said Paraguay violated the covenant by declaring war and urged application of Article 16 sanctions including financial and possible military penalties.
At the world disarmament conference Dr Giuseppe Motta urged unified action and asked what the United States would do in event of conflict. American ambassador Norman H. Davis prepared a forthcoming speech with expectations the U S would back tight arms supervision and possibly relax neutrality rights in war.
In municipal court this morning Edward F. O'Shea was arraigned for violating the traffic law. He was ordered to pay a fine of 5 dollars and costs of 6.82 dollars. Building in New Zealand is showing and decided increase.
