A special telegram reports a gas explosion at the Fraterville and Thistle coal mines in Coal Creek Tennessee. About 300 miners were at work. only one escaped when blown from the mine. Flames issued from mouths and vents as the death toll swelled past 200. The Fraterville mine, oldest in the district, is owned by Coal Creek Coal Co. Major RE. C. Camp serves as president and GM. The scene drew Prof Richard C. Ely of Wisconsin to town to visit his son.
Robert Scott of Exeter assignee of John H. Pike of Epping has disposed of Pike's grocery and paint stock to George Rowe and Sadie A. Puke. The store will be operated by them. The sale includes the book accounts and will help wind up Pike's affairs this week. The estate will pay a dividend between 25 and 80 percent.
