The German steamer Sakkarah under Capt. Piening became a total loss on Huan olin Island off the Chilean coast. The fate of her crew and passengers is unknown. The cargo included 1.5 million dollars in gold specie remitted by the Chilean government. Sakkarah departed April 24 from here bound for Hamburg.
A major blaze in Portland started at the city stables near the Portland and Rochester railroad station and spread to about twenty five wooden structures on Hanover street. Firefighters controlled the flames by six this evening with an estimated loss not exceeding ten thousand dollars.

Concord May 13 at a Concord meeting the New Hampshire fish and game commissioners selected Mr Wentworth as chairman for the commission.
This morning at the state house a commission meeting discussed matters before the board. Nathan Wentworth of Hudson was chosen chairman while Charles B. Clarke of this city and Merrill Short- Jeff of Lancaster joined as members. Clarke was elected secretary. Wentworth suffers a disabled hand likely from a fish hook incident.
Edward Erwin of Boston slept off a drink on a Boston to Newburyport train. He trashed seats, confronted a quiet passenger, was struck and knocked unconscious with four stitches later. A physician treated him. police detained him on arrival as he recovered consciousness and identified himself.
The city board ordered private carts carriages and other non city property removed from the stables. Street Commissioner Willey reports most city teams housed and a small spare room now available. The move followed a last Thursday aldermen meeting and an order to end free storage for unaffiliated individuals.

Capt William Robinson veteran of the Appledore and Major vessels died last Friday in Boston hospital of kidney disease. He lately commanded the Staples Coal tug Tacony and was a noted figure in shipping circles. A Newburyport native, his wife survives him. body sent to Philadelphia for burial.
Catherine Long aged seventy died Monday at the home of her stepson Dennis Long on State street. Levi Locke aged seventy three died Tuesday at the home of his nephew Andrew Locke in Rye. Funeral services are set for two o'clock Thursday afternoon.
A full Gen eral Gilman Marston command meeting approved purchasing five hundred potted blossoms for Memorial Day. It named Tlon C. W. Hidden of Newburyport as orator for June 20. An invitation from Rev Mills for the command and the Woman's Veteran Relief union to attend service at Rye Congregational Church on June 1 was accepted. The Retail Clerks union plans a baseball club using ample material for a strong team.
