The Odd Ladies Circle met yesterday at Mrs. Justin Wendell’s Cass street home with 25 in attendance. A fine chicken pie dinner followed, featuring mashed potatoes creamed carrots peas cabbage salad rolls strawberry short cake and coffee. After business the group socialized and presented Mrs. Wendell a potted hydrangea in appreciation of her hospitality.
The Arcadia Theatre features Sun Mon and Tue shows with The Valjeans Harry Kelly and Co and The Four Jacks performing in Sucker Money. Wichita Henrys basketball team swept eight games on their Hawadii invasion.
The farm strike is off at least temporarily except for milk strikes in Wisconsin and northern Illinois. President Roosevelt urges leniency in mortgage foreclosures and other claims against farmers. Leaders of the Farmers Holiday Association abandon the project. Olson urges deferral until the President's plan shows results.
Troop 158 defeated the Sea Scout baseball team 20 to 10 in the season opener. Hodgdon pitched for the Sea Scouts and Collins worked from the mound for the Boy Scout troop.
Another open air service will be held in Greenland at 430 D. 8. T. Sunday near the corner of Exeter Road and Winnicut Road. Instrumental music by Greenland musicians and songs by the Greenland choir. Walter Holley leads congregational singing and Rev. Newton T. Anderson, minister of Greenland Federated Church, will deliver the Gospel message.
The annual inspection of DeWitt Clinton commandery Knights Templar was held Friday at the Masonic Temple with several hundred in attendance. Edward B. Austin presided, joined by Harry H. Meader of Gonio grand commander of New Hampshire. The Order of the Temple was conferred after the inspection, following a fried chicken banquet catered by P. O. Hicks of Lynn, Massachusetts.
Associated Press reports Poona India May 13 Gandhi weight down to 93 pounds amid ongoing three week fast begun last Monday noon. Fearing dehydration he shows distaste for water and may not survive the third week despite friends efforts. He refuses to end the fast unless Untouchables are recognized by the British government.
The Junior Prize Speaking contest of Eliot High School was held at the Congregational Church last evening. A large audience enjoyed the program as prizes were awarded to Ernest Rowe first, Madeline Perkins second, with honorable mention to Lila Morin. The program featured poems and speeches by students, with orchestral and choral performances by the Eliot high school groups. Judges included Vance McHaughton, J S Warren, and Mrs Elmer J Burnham. Ushers were named and Newell Ordway acted as marshal.
The May party of younger boys and girls from the South Parish Sunday School was held at the parish house on Court Street Friday after school. Children enjoyed games and were served ice cream and assorted cake at the close of the gathering.
The Salvation Army drive failed to reach its $3,000 quota due to neglect in many cases. The committee will extend the campaign one week, urging pledges now as response to letters has been poor. Three thousand dollars is needed to carry on the work, with several large contributors yet to respond.
The Maine Travel Exchange hosted Bill Edson and Mrs Edson of Sturbridge and E Barron of Worcester along with Chief Needahbeh a famed Maine Indian guide. Edson a renowned fly caster plans a Maine tour visiting fishing camps to demonstrate casting. He holds a world record 126 feet and averages about 110 feet on distance casts.
