Clippers bring home nine Apple Blossom trophies
Portsmouth High School Clipper Band returns to Alexandria at 9 p.m. carrying nine trophies from the 51st Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester. They placed second in the overall field marching finals, narrowly behind Spring Valley, S C, and earned honors in Grand Feature Parade and Firemen's Parade divisions along with rifle and flag squad trophies. Band director William E. Elwell praised the group for a super effort amid the toughest competition yet.

Shipyard set to hold election for union representation
A election to choose an exclusive bar for about 5,000 Portsmouth Naval Shipyard workers will occur within 60 days. Assistant Secretary of Labor Francis X. Burkhardt ordered the vote after backing the National Association of Government Employees in its challenge to the Federal Employees Metal Trades Council AFL CIO. Kenneth T. Lyons said a pre election conference will determine guidelines, with petitions filed April 15 1977 and the MTC contract ratified May 25 1977, noted in a memorandum of agreement signed January 31 1977 making the agreement non binding until membership ratification. The NAGE is the largest independent public sector union with over 250 000 members.

Tenants Driven Out in Cimarron Fire
A 2:30 a.m. blaze at 113 Cimarron Drive destroyed a three and a half story building housing 68 units. Residents were evacuated with ladders as firefighters fought the flames aided by Amesbury Salisbury and Newburyport crews. David R. Berkowitz pleaded guilty to four of the six Son of Sam killings in a packed New York court. He admitted the night time shootings with a .44-caliber revolver and was to plead guilty to the remaining two offenses after a court recess.
