Former Governor Craig Benson left behind more than 46000 in unpaid legal bills when he left office. The debt was cleared this week from a special fund in the attorney general's office for legal settlements. By June 2004 Benson contracted Concord attorney Bryan Gould to represent him in two cases. The first case settled, the second was abandoned after two months. Gould's rate was 190 per hour, and Benson paid him 8150 for staff attorney work in his final month.
