Concord May 7 The state senate passed a bill to extend the Rockingham race track franchise for ten years after next year in an 18 to 2 vote. Senators Curtis H. Page and Clarence Avery voted no. The bill began as a peremptory betting extension for four years but was amended by Senator John O Reilly. Also the house approved a bill to require jurors in major superior court trials to prevent mistrials due to illness. A bid to reconvene a constitutional convention to cut the legislature size was introduced. A banking committee vote defeated a bill to legalize branch banks. The senate Liquor Laws committee favors permitting restaurants to sell wine up to 14 percent alcohol, up from the current 6 percent.
Washington May 7 AP The house neared final vote on legislation to authorize President Roosevelt to requisition idle foreign vessels in U S ports for defense as reconditioning of 28 sabotaged Axis ships proceeded apace. A maritime commission official said 36 Italian and two German vessels were being made seaworthy in anticipation of passage while two other Italian ships with no sabotage evidence were placed in protective custody by the coast guard weeks ago.

A truck at the city dump was set alight by hot ashes this noon. Engine four of the Ports mouth fire department extinguished the blaze before significant damage occurred.
Portsmouth Police Commissioners voiced unanimous support for School Safety Patrols at their Monday meeting led by John M. Leary of the New Hampshire Division of the AAA. Leary described patrols started in 1921, noting eleven million youths participated with no fatalities and a drop in auto deaths among youngsters. education officials had previously rejected the idea.

Pastor emeritus of Betheny Congregational Church Rye J W Flagg quietly turned 86 at home 28 Willow Lane. He received three gifts from the Ladies' Aid Society. a cake was baked by a member and cards were given. Mrs Flagg has been an invalid for seven years and is now critically ill.
The jury in Superior Court, before Judge Oscar L. Young, awarded Ed mond T. Hayford two thousand dollars against Douglas W. Cottrell after two days of trial. Attorney Stanley M. Burns of Dover represented the plaintiff, with Maurice Devine and John Tombin of Manchester for the defense.
The National Defense school begins its second term with machine shop practice opening at 6 20 p m. Classes in mathematics blue print reading and machine shop theory start at seven o clock.
