A group of 30 to 40 demonstrators from Goddard College arrived at the Vermont State House to protest the state’s management of the war on poverty program led by 21 year old Roland Hayes. They pledged to stay until 3 p.m. in a show of dissent.
About 4000 members of the International Union of Electrical Workers returned to General Electric in Pittsfield Massachusetts after walking off Friday in support of 21 transformer shop workers who quit last Tuesday over a contract pay rate dispute. The plant makes parts for Polaris missiles.
Columbia University classes resumed as protests continued, ending formal teaching at Columbia College four weeks early and signaling an unsettled term. Rebel students maintained a boycott as staff and demonstrators clashed briefly, with acting dean Henry Coleman held inside his office for about a day.
Washington reports UN Ambassador design ate George Ball says North Vietnam is probing for leverage as US-North Vietnam peace talks near in Paris. Administration sources call the attacks discouraging as talks loom. Ball notes infiltration, predicts heightened pressure before talks open. Soviet Communist party signals guarded approval of preliminary talks in Moscow.
Police say a high speed chase ended in a fiery collision between a family car and a Marine on leave from Vietnam in Reading Massachusetts. Victims included Robert Zeick 30 Jean 29 and their three children and an unborn baby. Marine Lance Cpl Richard Kearns 21 died at the scene after his sedan struck a tree. Firefighters faced a brutal rescue as they removed victims from the wreckage. Two teen boys Donald Hutchins and Dana Gray were among witnesses.
The New Hampshire Young Republicans call for a broad based nondiscriminatory tax and tax reform to ease city and town burdens. A resolution introduced by Robert Sampson of Nashua was adopted, though it does not specify income or sales tax. Peter Flood was elected chairman, succeeding Louis Georgopoulos.
Surgeons in Houston perform their second heart transplant in three days. patients show progress. Rizor, eighth transplant patient, dies at Stanford after the operation. Cobb, 48, receives heart of a 15 year old killed in a motorcycle crash. Thomas, 47, had the heart of a 15 year old donor. West, 45, in London had heart replaced. Rizor’s death attributed to lung damage and oxygen shortage in the blood.
President Johnson urged speed on the 10 percent income tax surcharge and warned a delay would bring disaster. He offered to accept a $4 billion spending cut while defending a $186 billion budget as tight. House Ways and Means hesitates amid re election pressures as Senate backs larger cuts.
The City Council schedules an 8 p.m public hearing at tonight’s regular meeting to vote on a proposed pay raise for hourly workers to 15 cents an hour and salaried staff up by 312 a year retroactive to January 1. The session also covers a proposed road link from Brackett Field to South Street, sewerage requests, and a letter from Arthur Clough about play-area impacts.
Paris AP reports a pitched battle on the Left Bank as students protest university rules, substandard facilities, and police brutality. Cobblestones and metal debris flew while police responded with tear gas and clubs in weekend unrest.
A large walkout of about 14 500 installers and repairmen continued into its 11th day with no quick settlement. A spokesman said Mary Kelly urged members to respect picket lines despite operators accepting a new contract. One lineman was arrested in Waltham for damaging a telephone cable with a machete. Local 1302 of the Communications Workers approved a national contract, ending their holdout.

Saigon faced a renewed North Vietnamese assault described as full fury with heavy explosions near Tan Son Nhut airport and downtown U S O and International House. Viet Cong held out at three points as South Vietnamese troops, aided by U S helicopter gunships, pressed through the old French cemetery area. Casualties were reported among South Vietnamese and two American injuries noted among observers. The offensive aimed to pressure talks in Paris while Hanoi claimed victory in some sectors.
