Patrols stay on duty at Mar- Now and Harrisville for major forest fire scenes.
Concord May 6 AP Forces in the House hostile to Governor Bloods merit service bill won an initial skirmish. The House moved to make the issue a special order of business next week. The judiciary committee sought to print and bring up the bill tomorrow.
Portsmouth Kiwanians will observe National Music Week tonight with a 30 minute program of musical varieties after dinner at 6 14 at the Rockingham hotel. Local members will perform and be surprised by the virtuosos in their midst.
Lawyers and residents testified before the Police Commissioners as they weigh the discharge of George Merrill alias John Davis of Lawrence Mass. The hearing reviewed Merrill’s long police record from 1929 and imprisonment for prison break. The board will render a decision at a later date.
Portsmouth Hospital invites the public to an open house this week in observance of National Hospital Day. Chairman H Clinton Taylor superintendent Miss Rosanna O Donoghue and trustees extend the invitation with Governor Blood endorsing the event via proclamation praising hospitals and urging public support for medical research and patient care on May 12.
National selective service director Gen Hershey proposes revising draft rules to exempt men over 30, arguing they are settled after that age and past their physical peak. He urges congressional action to defer by age class, noting older men show greater dependency and disabilities. training in tanks and planes requires sharp coordination and younger draftees are better suited.

Ralph Casella aged 35 of 14 Otis Avenue, Kittery, died at Naval hospital Portsmouth after falling 18 feet from scaffolding on the building ways at the Navy yard. He worked there as a welder and is survived by wife Caroline, three children Eleanor Ralph Jr and Emile, and his parents. Burial planned in Pittsfield Mass.
Mrs Adolphus E Watson wife of Rear Adm Adolphus E Watson commandant of the fourth naval district has been named sponsor of the submarine Finback scheduled to be launched at the Navy yard here Sept 23 The Navy department announced also that the launching of the submarine Drum at the local yard next Monday will take place at 45 p.m Mrs Thomas Holcomb of Washington DC is the sponsor
Shirley Hamilton suffered a bruised knee after falling from a car driven by her mother Mrs P A Hamilton on Sunday afternoon at the corner of Crescent and Porpoise Way. The latch gave way as they neared the Boat Road where F A Hamilton works on the Fower Ship Jaconia. The driver was cautious and no serious injury occurred.
Army uniforms at Fort Portsmouth introduce color coded overseas cap piping to distinguish units. Scarlet edges mark Coast Artillery, green for Corps Area Service Command, buff for Quartermaster Corps, white and maroon for Medical Corps, with Finance shown by a distinctive piping. Includes note that overseas caps replace garrison caps for all branches.
The United States halted all exports to Russia of machinery or equipment that can be used in defense production. The policy follows negotiations with the Soviet ambassador and undersecretary of State and aims to bar exports aiding defense and British aid production amid new base construction in Panama and other Caribbean locations.
British and Iraqi war reports describe a four day shelling of the Habbaniah airfield west of Baghdad with negligible gains for Iraqi artillery. RAF aircraft kept control over positions, while Diwaniya and Basra saw targeted hits. Turkish mediation fell through as Baghdad rejected terms, and British leaflets were dropped on Baghdad as press critiqued diplomacy.
A strike by United Automobile Workers CIO halted work at three Ex-Cell-O defense tool plants in Detroit. Freight resumed between Maine and Boston after a 15 day AFL truck drivers strike ended with a two year contract. The deal raises pay by five to eight cents an hour, preserves an eight hour day with overtime, and allows the war clause to run to April 1942 with 30 days notice to cancel. About 800 workers across 41 firms were involved.

Newall J. Paire, former principal of the Center school at North Hampton, was named assistant principal of Concord Junior High School by the Board of Education. A Keene resident aged 27, he is a Keene Teachers college graduate near completion of a master's degree, succeeding John G. Pike Jr. on leave.
The April 1941 postal report shows the 36th straight month of increased business from the Portsmouth postoffice. Postmaster Peter J. Hickey announced April totals of 9945545 dollars, up from 7916.20 dollars, an increase of 1539.26 dollars.
Concord May 6 The State Supreme court cleared three Jehovah’s Witness children in Nashua from a municipal court ruling. The court voided a verdict that had sent them to the state industrial school at Manchester for failing to salute the flag. The decision returns the case to the Nashua school board which had expelled them.
Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden told the House of Commons the sooner United States war materials reach Asia Africa and Europe the sooner the war will end. He urged Turkey to stand by Britain and warned Arab peoples to beware of Axis victory. He defended the combined effort with the United States amid clashes over the war review.
