Isador Baccus, a deaf and dumb janitor, caused a catastrophe at Hamburger Lipmans and Company when an elevator shaft trap injured eight girls fatally and harmed over twenty others. About 1200 workers were present as panic erupted, guiding rescues and fires alarms amid a chaotic crush.

New York April 20 The battleship Maine sails with Rear Admiral Crowninshield aboard to assume command of the European station and participate in naval ceremonies for King Edward. The Maine is commanded by Captain George A. Converac.
Dartmouth defeats Bowdoin 7 to 4 in Hanover with Newick pitching a strong game. Bowdoin tallies three runs in the ninth after miscues, while Dartmouth gains by hits from O Connor Cregg and Ralling and a two base hit by Robins.
A cable from Rear Admiral Rodgers details U S Navy efforts to quell the Samar uprising. He notes seven hundred insurgents with seventy five rifles surrendered at Catbalogan on the 27th. No organized bandits remain. Evans raised the flag on the Kentucky the 28th and Harris becomes temporary governor of Olongapo.
Trattsburg residents report that daily letters pour into Clinton prison in Dannemora for the three Van Warmer brothers condemned to death for their uncle Peter Hallewbeck's murder. Edward Davenport alias Edward Smith was lodged in Exeter jail awaiting October grand jury action in default of $500 bonds. He faces charges by Mary Genevieve Sargent of Chester for daytime breaking and entering the Chester dwelling of Susan Hezetan and burgling it of a gold watch and valuables. Hearing before Justice Arthur H. Wilcomb. Constable W T Martin of Chester praised for building the case with help from Traverhill police that recovered most of the stolen property.
A tornado swept over Davenport last night causing extensive damage to several houses. In Guthrie reports no women were killed.
The Russian battleship Retvizan, damaged in combat and crippled by the Crampa, departed Philadelphia on April 30 for repair and return to Russia.
The Naval band is slated to perform at a May ball this evening in Somersworth bringing a naval concert to the local event.
Washington April 30 Secretary Long ends his official career at the helm of the naval establishment. Moody will assume duties tomorrow morning with few immediate changes. Fred T. Fishback to serve as confidential clerk replacing Greer. Secretary Long receives a complimentary dinner at the New Willard Hotel hosted by department chiefs with Admiral Dewey and Admiral O’Neil in attendance.
