Riot police attacked a blockhouse on private land near Narita airport as thousands protest the $1 billion facility. The clash follows the destruction of the control tower and possible delays to the airport opening.
A spring storm blanketed Maine with up to three inches of wet snow causing dozens of spinouts. George Dunn, 42, of Norway died in a two car crash on slippery roads in Scarborough. Dunn's wife Esther, 40, was seriously injured when their car collided with a pickup truck on Payne Road.
Fans and friends filed past Karl Wallenda's bronze coffin as a 24 foot balance pole hung overhead in tribute. Wallenda's body lay in state for six hours at Robarts Sports Arena, a venue tied to his performances. Burial services were planned for today.
In Great Barrington Massachusetts a 10 year old boy Michael Donowski died by hanging at the Vesper Hills School for the retarded. Medical examiner Dr. Peter Albano called the death accidental after autopsy findings. Police said the boy was a ward of the state of New Jersey living at the private school.
Boston AP Avi Nelson a radio host launched his Republican bid for U S Senate against Sen Edward W Brooke saying Brooke has abandoned Republican principles. Nelson vows to fight for limited taxation economic freedom parental control of education and strong defense. He criticizes Brooke for wavering and for supporting Panama Canal treaty provisions. Nelson outlined a tour through Boston Springfield Pittsfield Worcester Lowell and New Bedford.
The School Department continues to study pupil transfers as it plans which students from slated-for-closure schools will attend new schools in the next fall term. The administration report notes it will take time to determine assignments.
Edward Powers 64 of Manchester plans retirement May 18 to Fort Myers Florida ending nearly 15 years as New Hampshire Sweepstakes director. A former FBI agent credited with solving the 1950 Brinks armored car robbery in Boston he led the agency since August 1963 guiding the evolution from horse-race tied draw to a full variety of weekly and daily lotteries.
In Concord New Hampshire Gov Meldrim Thomson and the Civil Liberties Union seek Supreme Court resolution on whether to lower state and federal flags on Good Friday to honor Christ The Supreme Court ruled Friday that lowering flags for the religious observance is not permitted pending study and the dispute could reach the high court this fall Civil Liberties Union officials said they will pursue the issue and oppose state observances of Good Friday
The Flatley Company of Braintree Massachusetts acquired Parade Mall from Barnett Mortgage Trust of Jacksonville Florida. Thomas J. Flatley says the plan is to refurbish the mall overhaul retail space and convert much of the lower level to offices, with over $200000 in improvements. The sale price is $1.25 million and the company aims to restore prominence in the downtown renewal area. The Flatley Company is a leading New England residential developer.
The Supreme Court declined to intervene in a dispute over who pays the clean-up of a 1972 Casco Bay oil spill. The Norwegian owner of the tanker Tamano is held responsible by a lower court for the more than 100,000 gallons spilled, with clean-up costs surpassing $4 million.
The Israeli cabinet unanimously endorsed Prime Minister Menachem Begin's plan for Palestinian autonomy on the West Bank and continued Israeli control pending future arrangements. Begin defended his talks with Carter and rejected calls to withdraw from the West Bank, while Sadat said Egypt and Israel speak different languages but aim for a settlement. In Lebanon, Palestinian guerrillas and Lebanese forces clashed near Mount Hermon as UN observers reported unclear targeting.
The Palestine Liberation Organization accuses Israeli forces of an all night attack on guerrilla positions in southeast Lebanon with running battles and multiple assaults near Hasbaya and the Hasbani River bridge. The PLO says 15 Israeli soldiers were killed or wounded in Hasbaya.
Public Service Company seeks a waiver from Hampton Falls and Seabrook zoning rules to aid Seabrook nuclear plant construction. The petitions cover wells, transmission lines, and undersea tunnels. Towns oppose potential water and height impacts and a public hearing is planned for May to weigh the welfare of the public.
The Supreme Court declined to hear Massachusetts prosecutors appeal seeking to overturn a suppression order in the murder of Carlton Bausch. Daniel Dustin, arrested after Bausch's death at a Holyoke tavern on April 17 1976, said authorities violated Miranda warnings and the case centers on statements made during questioning in Holyoke jail.
