Provincetown officials seek emergency water sources after gasoline leakage threatens the town's main supply. A Tuesday factfinding session in Hyannis with town state and federal officials aims to secure alternatives for thousands of summer tourists.
The Justice Department says the administration can cut food stamps for striking coal miners who ignore federal orders to return to work. Agriculture Secretary Bergland said the decision was made Monday night at a White House meeting with Attorney General Bell and others.

The state sought 1900000 and may receive more as repairs begin and cost estimates are prepared. Highway Commissioner John Clements says funds will restore mounds and sea walls to protect coastal roads from future high seas.
Thousands of Israeli troops overran guerrilla bases in southern Lebanon and warplanes struck refugee camps around Beirut. At least ten residents died in Sabra and Ozai, with Israel aiming to seal a border strip after last weekend’s deadly raid. Syria urged UN action as Begin and Weizman visited troops in Lebanon.

In Hampton, Town Manager Peter Lombardi loses a confidence vote 930 to 835 amid calls for resignation, while voters approve keeping the town manager form of government and favor an executive secretary status. The meeting also selects new board and committee members and endorses CWIP opposition and growth controls.
Seabrook residents approved a measure to curb Public Service Co water supply by a 964 to 265 vote. Selectman Clyde Brown questioned legality amid potential PSC litigation. In other races James Falconer won a selectman seat, succeeding the late Emery Eaton, with extensive town-wide results for road agent, school board, fire chief, police chief, budget committee and constables.
