Two months into the year and Portsmouth has seen only one serious automobile accident. The call goes out for drivers to maintain caution, reduce road risks, and aim for a year with no fatal crashes.
Forecast for New Hangshire calls for fair skies tonight with a drop in temperature and Saturday bringing continued fair weather as temperatures gradually rise.
In Concord on March 8 the House defeated the Hampton and Hampton Beach separation bill without debate or dissent. A unanimous unfavorable report from the lower chamber supported the bill’s rejection, ending efforts to establish Hampton Beach as a separate town and outline property division.
Washington March 6 The administration's new ship subsidy would cost the government between 18 000 000 and 20 000 000 annually. Officials said the plan would save about one third versus current ocean mail contracts and aid only essential routes. Some steamship lines in weak financial condition might lose government support if the plan passes. Subsidies would go only to applying companies on essential routes and not to U S lines in direct competition.
In Havana on March 8 the anti government strike expanded to workers at most transportation facilities after a night of Continental bomb explosions. Streetcar workers quit, paralyzing transit. railroad and bus crews voted to join but set no walk out date. Fourteen bombs exploded in city and suburbs, seven at interior points. Army took control of hospitals as staff deserted facilities.
Concord March 6 a new loan of seventy five thousand dollars to the city of Berlin was authorized by the Governor and Council at their meeting yesterday. The money will help Berlin carry on work projects for relief of unemployment under the same terms as earlier loans.
A scrambled note notes a forecast of many patients arriving at the hospital with references to trays and prices. readable bits imply an upcoming surge or busy period ahead. The fragmentary text hints at costs or registrations but specifics remain unclear.
The New York stock market at 1 10 p m showed a small advance with utilities metals and scattered industrials leading. Eastman Kodak rose two points and Coca Cola Continental Can American Can Case Procter & Gamble American Telephone Consolidated Gas Public Service of New Jersey U S Smelting and Cerro de Pasco advanced modestly while Santa Fe and Southern Pacific improved and New York Central and Pennsylvania slipped slightly.
Simple funeral services were held today for Oliver Wendell Holmes with Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Supreme Court colleagues present. President Roosevelt planned to attend the graveside ceremony at Arlington cemetery as hundreds braved a chill wind outside All Souls Unitarian Church. The service included a scriptural reading solemn music and a reading of one of Holmes favorite poems.
Athens March 8 Premier Panayoti Tsaldaris told the Associated Press his government does not fear the rebellion and will soon end it. He said attacks on Athens or other parts are unlikely. Crete and parts of the Aegean remain unsettled while Gen Kondylis plans a decisive offensive, weather permitting.
The 10 year old Alyce Jane McHenry from Omaha, now the focus of national concern, remains improving according to doctors. A bulletin states she had a fairly restful night and continued progress in her health battle.

Vienna reports the Austrian government tobacco monopoly organized a special corps of cigar experts to hand out free smokes to newcomers. The effort aims to introduce beginners to the product and promote brand awareness across the city.
Washington March 8 the Senate raised the army appropriation by 20 000 000 to about 400 000 000 and increased enlisted strength by 46 250 to 165 006. Debate cited war fears with Japan and possible conflict with Britain as pressures mounted before adjournment. Senator Harrison tried to add 375 000 for an air base. bill delayed to today.
Washington March 8 A warning that delays and uncertainties over NRA legislation slowed trade and industry was given to the senate finance committee by Donald Richberg director of the National emergency council He told the committee the job of trimming the vast code structure should be moved to Congress and outlined eight codes already suspended and seven service trade codes modified except for wages hours and bargaining guarantees.
Government seeks to boost revenue by guiding weed consumption strategies. Proposals emphasize taxation, regulated markets, and public education to maximize lawful sales and reduce illegal trade.
James A. Caseldon of Portland was awarded the National Safety Council's President's medal for saving Lawrence Whitten at Sabbath Day Lake New Gloucester last August. An increase of 20 000 members in the Methodist Episcopal Church South women's missionary society during 1934 was reported.
The educational committee led by Mrs. Alex Salden plans a Current Events program with a knowledgeable speaker and a musical segment. The Sunday school, reorganized by the council, is chaired by Mrs. Joseph Sussman with assistants Misses Ethel Ziedman and Frances Mannoch.
