Detroit patrolman Dayton AL Winegar was shot and killed during a confrontation with two robbers on St Aubin Avenue after a haberdashery holdup. The suspects fled in a waiting car and Winegar pursued, engaging in a gun battle before dying.
A spectacular blaze in downtown Duluth Minnesota destroyed a six story office building and rooming house. Three persons including an elderly woman and two children died. Nels Swanson and a man was unaccounted for. About 156 occupants were evacuated by firefighters. Damage estimated at 78000 to 100000 dollars.
The market edged higher early but slowed as profit taking weighed on many issues. J I Case surged over 14 points before profits trimmed gains, while People’s Gas Eastman Kodak and Pacific Gas & Electric climbed to yearly highs only to give back some gains. Southern Railway fell 1?4 points to a new low for the year. Total volume around 4.8 million shares.
Ten workers were killed and 21 injured in a mine explosion near Charol France on March 8. Early reports indicate coal-damp gas ignition as the likely cause of the blast.

John Walsh of Manning Street employed by Consolidation Coal Co was jammed between a coal digger and a beam at the dock today. He was treated at Portsmouth Hospital with bruises and no broken bones reported after examination with X ray.
Police raid near Melo Park uncovered two bombs four shotguns and several revolvers. Detectives surrounded the farmhouse at midnight forcing occupants to surrender. Principal captures included Tony Caniencio and Tony Giannine, with many detainees linked to the Genne gang.
In Los Angeles on March 8 the bodies of James E. Doles 28 Western Air Express pilot and two companions were recovered from a wrecked transport in a San Bernardino mountain canyon. A. W. Bieber 20 co pilot and John W. Slaton 35 steward were also aboard when the plane disappeared during a February 23 storm after leaving Kingman Arizona for Los Angeles.
