Paterson New Jersey reports floodwaters from the Passaic river driving over six hundred families from homes and threatening the Spruce Street Raceway area. In nearby Boston and Dover New Hampshire, flood and dam concerns rise as rains continue and Bow Lake dam fears grow among workers and residents.
Widespread storm damage leaves hilly streets badly rashed out and extensive destruction across the city. Local residents report extensive damage to roads, debris-filled lanes, and disrupted travel as officials begin repair assessments.
Father reports to police that 23 year old Fannie Lucas disappeared from her Dover home Friday forenoon shortly after eleven o'clock. The search spanned the woods and nearby districts with no trace found. A $100 reward was offered for her return dead or alive. She was described as four feet six inches tall, slender, with red hair and a brown and green cap.
The Merrimac River rose three feet by March 2 in Maverhill and submerged the fender of the Merrimill bridge at dusk. Flood risk increased by ice breakup and Friday evening’s heavy thaw. Residents report the river is clear past Rocks bridge despite rising waters.
A photo of a man about 36 with a small mustache in a calt frame was recovered from Nahant surf near the life-saving station. It bears the name Capt. G J Frisbee and is believed from a shipwreck in the storm. Capt. Howard Frisbee of South Boston identified the likeness as his cousin Capt. Charles J Frisbee of Kittery Me, last heard three years ago in West Indian waters.
Mrs. Sarah Wright sold her 200 acre North River district farm in Epping to John Gerry of Massachusetts. The land is to be acquired by the Epping Brick company for a large brick plant, with operations possibly starting in April. If built, many workers will be employed and local property owners anticipate a boom.
A huge night time blast in Reading on March 2 destroyed a four story music store occupied by C H Liehty and an adjoining three story brick umbrella factory. Both structures collapsed, totaling a loss of 260000 dollars. Several people were in the buildings. three missing are believed dead. The explosion is suspected to be gas related.
Prince Henry toured Lookout Mountain to view the ground where Union and Confederate forces clashed, then continued his northern journey. He left Chattanooga, crossed Alabama and Tennessee with brief Nashville stops, entered Kentucky with cautions at Louisville and Bowling Green, and headed toward Indianapolis before turning toward St. Louis on the Vandalia line. The prince received warm, demonstrative hospitality in the South.
Fall River Massachusetts March 2 James Wallace seventy is in critical condition at the Fall River hospital from a concussion and brain hemorrhage with several scalp and body bruises after a vicious attack by William Hamilton thirty seven. Hamilton is under arrest. The two men were close friends and neighbors. Wallace had called on Hamilton and waited as Hamilton returned drunkenly and assaulted him after driving his wife from the house.
Agent Benn of the Law Enforcement association conducted two raids yesterday afternoon in Dover. At Frank Newhall’s saloon, malt liquor was seized though no hard liquor found. his St Thomas street home yielded nothing. At Grace Niles’s saloon near Central avenue and New York street, cilt liquor was seized. owners must appear before the police court on Monday morning.
Rear Admiral George W Melville, chief of the bureau of steam engineering, defends torpedo boats as well designed and capable for the U S Navy. He disputes claims of structural weakness and over weighing, saying engines are near perfection and heavier boats can perform better. He asserts the fleet will proceed to trial tests under department rules. He also notes they are among the best destroyers and torpedo boats built by any government.
A dated advertisement touts Cascareta Candy Cathartic as a guaranteed cure for constipation. It claims genuine tablets stamped C C C and urges druggists to stock small bulk lots rather than bulk orders.
A February 24 1902 New York Evening Post report states the American Newspaper Publish- ers Association seeks Congress to abolish duties on wood pulp mechanical ground wood and timber used for paper. It argues price increases threaten presses as supply tightens and calls for repeal to prevent higher newsprint costs.
Washington reports public release of the river and harbor bill with about half a million dollars more than the failed prior measure. The compilation lists numerous New England allocations including Camden Isles of Shoals Boston harbor items, Gloucester and New Bedford channels, Narragansett Bay works, and Connecticut river surveys, with multiple contract authorizations and state allocations across Maine to Connecticut and Rhode Island.
