Congress prepares for a tight week with votes and debates on defense funding, foreign aid, highways, and school grants. Senators consider a 33 billion defense bill with a possible add atop Eisenhower’s request, while the House weighs a Veterans pension expansion and a broad federal aid push for highways and education.
President elect Gamal Abdel Nasser vowed to defend the constitution and rights as Egypt’s first president. He claimed victory in the first secret-ballot election with more than 90 percent support. Interior Ministry data cited 94 percent voter turnout and 99.7 percent backing Nasser, with 97.7 percent approving the new constitution establishing the republic. The Revolution Command Council granted the interior minister power to detain administratively any dissidents.
Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson took a Canada fishing break during a four day session with civilian and military leaders at Quantico. He faced backlash over calling senators efforts to fund the Air Force “phony” and said he was misquoted. The Senate plans a major vote on a 1.16 billion dollar air power package as critics demand restraint and policy clarity.
James Edmund Whitley of 19 Rogers Street, a former city official and prominent Mason, died at Portsmouth Hospital after a short illness. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Kearsarge, survived as its last crew member, then served in the Spanish American War before returning to Portsmouth to work at the Naval Shipyard as chief clerk in the supply department.
President Eisenhower will convalesce at his Gettysburg farm after discharge from Walter Reed this week. He plans to spend his 40th wedding anniversary there, and will visit Panama City July 21-22 for meetings with American presidents. EASTPORT MEANearly steps begin for a $3 million Passamaquoddy Bay tidal power survey directed by Engineer Richard E Field from Bellows Falls VI with a field office in Maine. The effort, to be run from Boston, aims to assess tidal power feasibility over up to three years at Passamaquoddy and Cobscook Bay on the Maine New Brunswick boundary. The U S government appropriated 2 7 million for the survey with 953000 available July 1 and Canada providing the remainder.
The Navy will display the GSS Albacore for public viewing on Navy Day July 4 as part of Jubilee Week, announced via Sen. Norvis Cotton. The destroyer USS Maloy will also make a four day visit beginning July 4. The Albacore, a test oriented true submarine unit, aims to inform future designs and set records.
Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King, 77, commander in chief of the U.S. Fleet and chief of naval operations in World War II, is in grave condition at Ports mouth Naval Hospital. He suffered circulatory and respiratory failure and has not responded to treatment. his son reports brain hemorrhage in 1947 left lasting effects.
Otis Air Force Base led a 400 man search for a missing jet after a fog bound sequence of crashes. A Coast Guard helicopter and two National Guard aircraft were lost with one body recovered, Coast Guard 41 year old John Kohan of Salisbury died in harbor. The missing 1st Lt. Robert H. Springer of Needham remained unconfirmed as to bail out or downed fate. Two guardsmen survived a field landing in Rutland while a third plane landed at Otis.
Camp Gundalow at Portsmouth in Greenland opens its seventh season with record enrollments the YMCA reports. registrations for the first two weeks are filled with only four openings left for July 9 to 13 and July 16 to 20. The camp shows a 300 percent increase from 1955, with 71 boys this year, up from 27 last year. Lt Col Andreas A Andrese and local contractors aided facility upgrades, with staff including James Eaton and George Daughan as assistant directors and several senior and junior counselors. Sessions run Monday to Friday with an overnight camp scheduled for July 5. parents may inquire at the YMCA for remaining slots.
Norfolk Va. 59 year old Minnie Mangum ex officer of Commonwealth Building & Loan was sentenced to 40 years total with 20 years consecutive for net embezzlement of 1 0 2 968 25 and 10 years for false information to the state corporation commission. Other indictments were dropped. She was jailed to await transfer to Goochland Virginia industrial farm for women. Mangum had pleaded guilty May 24 to 12 indictments from shortages totaling nearly three million dollars that wrecked the institution.
Iceland Conservatives led by Olafur Thors won 19 seats in the Althing as Progressives and Social Democrats gained to 25 seats, with a coalition likely. Turnout exceeded 90 percent of 90,090 eligible voters, and withdrawal of U.S. forces remained a key issue at Keflavik and other bases. A government coalition appears necessary, as neither side secured a clear majority.
