The town hall meeting in Kittery sought a solution on whether to maintain or remove the old shack on Town Wharf used by fishermen and a ski club. Port Authority and selectmen discussed relocating and improving the building with rules, while local volunteers defended the club’s work and safety record amid odor and nuisance complaints.
The Jona Paul Jones Chapter 23 of the National Association of Retired Civil Employees plans a Ladies Night at Simpsons Pavilion on June 20 at 6. The program will be provided by the State Police.
KITTERY Traip Academy status public or private high school has been referred to Wy Gen Jones Ervin to determine. Mrs. Cassandra Lutts, school committee chair, announced after a conference with School Supt. Robert L. Workman and Education Dept officials. The town could lose about $18,000 a year in state aid for building construction, with the balance of payments on the Wikdes Building and the new Kittery Point Elementary School. The act would affect future aid for new schools. Tr aip is funded largely by public funds, but the academy’s trustees own part of the property and share oversight. Cape Elizabeth, Gorham, Kennebunk, Limestone, Madawaska, Millinocket, Scarborough, Winslow and Winthrop would receive portions of the $2.2 million aid in the next two years. Workman expects the attorney general’s word within days.
Kittery town officials plan to brief the House Armed Services Committee via Adm. Joshua W. Cooper on a 369000 supplemental sum to include Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Hospital and Disciplinary Command in the sewage project. Officials seek Muskie and Stahli support, HUD funding, and possible Phase II/III extensions ahead of June bids.
Kelvin Gye Murch, 29, of Nasharah Mass, pleaded innocent but was found guilty and fined $10 in Southern York District Court Friday for failing to stop at the signal of two police officers on Route 1 in Kittery June 20. Patrolman Almon S. Boston testified he clocked Murch at 60 mph in a Smile zone and flashed the cruiser lights and siren for more than a mile before Murch stopped alongside York Corner. Murch said rain and fog kept him from seeing or hearing the signals until then.
Judge Verity ruled that drivers must alert and not drive with steamed windows. Murch received an initial fine for speeding and pleaded guilty. Dozens of defendants from Kittery to York Beach faced fines for offenses including stop sign violations, speeding, and illegal alcohol possession. A divorce was granted to Alli de Rochemont from Orville de Rochemont of Eliot on cruelty grounds.
Wells Congregational Church held Children’s Sunday with a service led by Linier High students under Walter Bay Ducharme. Noreen and Diane Ducharme assisted, with Wayne Litchfield and Cheryl Gray among attendees. New members Marilyn MacDonald Sheila Cameron Meredith Ricker welcomed. 100 percent attendance awards given. church walkway rails and front steps rails installed. Junior Church services resume Sundays at 10 a.m. after summer adjournment. A 1932 bill to incorporate White Mountain Planked Road Co. passed Legislature.
Four new members join Boy Scout Troop 340 from Cub Pack 0 and Richard Pars receives a Life award during a candle light ceremony led by scoutmaster Dewitt C. Lane at the American Legion post. Second and first class ranks are earned by Alan Toulouse Clinton Parks q, and William Truman. Twenty one merit badges are listed for various scouts. Office positions include John deWildt and Bruce Goodwin. One year service stars are awarded to seventeen scouts. Eagle Scout Joseph Jenkins leads closing ceremonies as summer activities pause until fall. Troop 340 plans resumed troop meetings and scout camp in September.
Senator Ed Mund unable to deliver an address at Alfred Courthouse during York County Regional Planning Commission meeting. Arthur Laugee of YCRUC cites congressional matters delaying the talk on regional planning and intergovernmental relations. Speech rescheduled for July. meeting remains at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
