Weather bulletin for Warrington New Hampshire predicts partly cloudy skies with showers possible in the southern portion Sunday. North portion shows similar pattern tonight or Sunday with slightly warm temperatures in the extreme south tonight.
Washington reports a $400 million highway fund will be allocated for public works starting July 1. Contracts will require a thirty hour work week with minimum pay, no convict labor, and use of pick and shovel over machinery. The plan includes broad geographic spread and aims at employing over a billion dollars under the total program. The Army and Navy will follow with housing and shipbuilding initiatives and similar labor rules on bids and navy yards.
Fire roared through Lowell Acre district destroying two three story municipal buildings and damaging a vacant six tenement house with total loss about 3000 dollars. A dynamite blast in the sewer department building followed the blaze. No injuries. one dog perished. Fire started in Land and Buildings structure at Cross and Fletcher, spread to an adjacent shed and the sewer building.
The annual St. John’s Day pilgrimage of DeWitt Clinton Commandery Knights Templar and allied bodies gathered today at the Hotel Wentworth after a 10 o’clock parade led by the DeMolay Band from the Masonic Home. A program of sports and vaudeville followed with a banquet at 6:20 and Grand Commander Harry Meader of Rochester present.
The schooner Amberjack I, captained by the president, sails toward Gloucester Massachusetts with the coast guard cutter Cuviaga close astern while reporters, a detective, and Stephen Early the president's secretary accompany the voyage.
A bandit armed with an automatic gun robbed the Benson Coal payroll in Melrose Mass seizing about 600 dollars from the cash drawer and forcing cashier Mabel Shilladay into another room before fleeing in a brown sedan toward Stoneham. Several workers nearby remained unaware of the crime during the incident.
Sea Scouts of New Hampshire encamped on Peirce Island for a three day jam boree. They sleep in tents and eat at the Yacht Club with use of the club house offered by Commodore Robert Marvin. Sightseeing trips included Isles of Shoals on the Sightseer steamer and a Navy Yard visit. Local and out of town scouts join Ranger Ship under Skipper James J. Joyce. Community leaders head the organizing committees and invite citizens to visit the camp.
The Universalist Vacation Church School starts Monday at 9 AM for its fourth annual season. It is interdenominational and open to ages 4 to 16 with classes for all departments. The daily program runs from 9 to 11 45 including assembly instruction, recreation, project period, and worship.
Navy yard workers will not switch to a five day schedule on July 1 and will continue under the present arrangement. A telegram from Assistant Secretary Henry L. Roosevelt, received by the local commandant, states that until the general hours question is settled by government agencies, including the Industrial Recovery Board, the Navy Department’s June 1 letter establishing a three day work week will be held in abeyance and yards will continue the current work week.
The summer session of the New Hampshire Weekly Publishers Association is underway at the Wentworth Hotel. A full day includes sightseeing and amusements, with a banquet tonight headlined by Billy B Van. Former Mayor F W Hartford will speak, and Rear Admiral C S Kempl and Comdr L B Stewart will attend. James Roosevelt was invited but sent regrets via telegram to Hartford.
Farmers of Robertsdale claim good profits from their igu numbber crops this season, noting favorable weather and market demand.
The 1933 Class of Portsmouth High marked its senior reception with a grand march directed by class officers Charlies P Haley Rosmerld Boyan Thomas A Boyan Jane Reid and Willard Wells. Students formed letters and numerals in coordinated formations as Georgine Moses Hakala guided the event. The gymnasium featured silver and white decor with beach umbrellas chairs gliders and an awning. Patrons and city officials attended.
