Britain's minority Labour government suffered its third defeat in three days as aides said Prime Minister Harold Wilson planned to advise Parliament next week on how to respond. The defeats were on minor issues and did not involve a no confidence motion, with Labour floor manager Robert Melfish declaring Parliament "no longer feasible." The government also faced a defeat over a plan to refund $24 million in taxes to trade unions, and a Thursday vote rejected a proposal to take partial control.
Federal Reserve Board governors rejected Friday the application by First Financial Group of New Hampshire to acquire Nashua Trust. The Manchester headquartered holding company would have controlled the Manchester Bank and other assets with deposits totaling about 147 million, while Nashua Trust held roughly 61.4 million in deposits making it the state’s fourth largest bank. The board voted 60 to deny citing potential adverse effects on competition though both banks were healthy. The decision paused a possible cross market consolidation between Manchester and Nashua firms.
