Formal Dedication Slated For Seacoast Toll Road
The 15 mile Portsmouth Seabrook toll road opens with a 3 pm ceremony at the Hampton Interchange led by Gov. Sherman Adams. A second ceremony will dedicate the road as a World War II memorial. Parking spaces abound but attendees are urged to arrive early. The toll is 10 cents at any Hampton entrance and the road links to U.S. 1 near the state line with Massachusetts.

A TOP SPEED of 60 miles an hour will be allowed on the road. To enforce that limit, two BStyle troopers will be permanently assigned to patrol the road. They will supervise traffic and provide on the spot aid to stranded motorists. A wrecking service will be kept on duty by toll road officials. Tow requests will take motorists to the nearest exit where a private wrecker will transfer them to a garage of their choice.

A four year campaign to bring back the identity of those who lost their lives at sea during wartime will end with the New Hampshire War Memorial erected at Pulpit Rock in Rye. William E Downs of Manchester lost his son near Yap in 1945 and has led a state wide effort to honor all sailors buried at sea. A $50,000 memorial and park is planned with work starting this fall after Gov Sherman Adams backed the project and formed a War Memorial commission headed by Downs. Veterans groups back the drive to fund the memorial and a kickoff is set for Vol Day August 34.
