The Republican convention enters its second day with no clear nominee. joyous scenes and lighthearted antics fill the halls of Philadelphia as sidelights of the event capture attention beyond formal business.
Judge Goldsborough rules $100 monthly pensions for United Mine Workers miners older than 62 with 20 years of pit work are reasonable and proper. The plan, proposed by John I. Lewis and Senator Styles Bridges, uses $5 million of a $45 million welfare fund funded by a 10 cent per ton coal royalty. The ruling may restart contract talks to avert July strikes and ends efforts to block pension payments by Van Horn.
Burglars netted $40 worth of merchandise in a raid last night on Winebaum's at 7 Congress Street. Entrance to the ground floor store was made through a roof window. Inside, clothes racks were dumped, threads and buttons scattered, and several items including six wristwatches six cigarette lighters a gold pen and pencil broken pipes pans and wallets were taken.
Lithuanian-American leader William F. Laukatis of Baltimore, president of the Lithuanian Alliance of America, told the alliance’s 45th convention that Communists are attempting to infiltrate foreign language groups in the United States to harvest information about American relatives in Russia. He urged groups like theirs to intensify screening of applicants.
The 1948 Republican platform pledges internationalism and a strong armed force while backing civil rights. Authored in nine hours of debate, it aims to win votes in November and reflects Sen. Arthur Vandenberg’s UN strengthening ideas with a call to end the big power veto in peaceful disputes. Israel aid is pledged within UN limits, and public housing advocates won a plank favoring housing reform.
In Portland Maine on June 22 attractive Rep Margaret C Smith won the Republican U S Senate nomination defeating three men Gov Horace Hildreth former Gov Sumner Sewall and Albion P Beverage. Smith polled 63629 votes to 31003 21788 and 6557 and is set for the September race if party tradition holds. Also featured are county results and other GOP races with Payne Lausier Hale and Nelson among the leaders.
In Concord on June 22 AP Donat Cole of Manchester head of Standard Construction Co faces contempt charges for wilfully destroying business records. If found guilty he could face jail or fines or both as determined by the presiding judge. Investigating alleged $700,000 in state contract awards without bidding, the attorney general cites destroyed records as central to the probe.
Civil War threats surface in Palestine as Jews clash over arms landing for Irgun in Natanya near Tel Aviv. Israel deploys naval and land forces to stop cargo imports under UN truce. Irgun claims casualties and warns of a blood battle if blocked. Concurrent Greek offensive against Communist rebels expands with 7,000 followers reported.
In Concord on June 22 AP reports New Hampshire lawmakers rejected a call for a special session to address a projected 1.59 million dollar deficit. The Senate voted 14 to 4 against and the House 228 to 125 opposed. State Rep. Fred A. Jones and Rep. John R. McIntire led the bid, arguing for funds to cover next year’s shortfall. Several Republican leaders opposed the session, citing weak finances.
Kittery Town Clerk Burnell Frisbee announced a tax rate set at 67 dollars per thousand, down two from last year’s 69. Frisbee attributed the reduction to increased valuations and higher automobile taxes, noting last year’s rate was the highest ever registered in the town.
At Convention Hall in Philadelphia on June 22, Republicans pressed toward a presidential nomination with Dewey Taft and Stassen at the center. Favorite son delegates held firm, delaying moves until after a couple of ballots.

Only select units in Manchester, Derry, Haverhill, Hillsborough, and Peterborough remain open as the guard lines up a 1688 officer and man quota. draftees may later fill guard slots if communities exhaust guard enlistments.
