Exeter High Assembly Awards To Graduating Seniors

Exeter High School held an awards assembly led by Senior Thomas Hichards with the yearbook The 112mack presented. Students received nurse office service and Industrial Arts awards, band officers were elected, and driver education tests plus a senior sign up party were held with yearbooks distributed.

Hanover Gets School Grant for Math Education

Concord AP reports State Education Commissioner Charles Rilch Jr announced a 3600 grant to the Hanover School District for an experimental mathematics program in grades 7-12. The project, to run during the 1980-1961 school year at Winn High School, is funded by the New Hampshire Committee for Mathematics & Science to modernize secondary math instruction for general and college bound students.

Railroad Averts Maine Strike Over Yard Work Dispute

In Portland Maine Central Railroad cheered as a threatened strike by operating-brother Nedstad was postponed after a conference with US District Judge Edward L. Gigantine. The dispute centered on yard territory between Portland's Union Station and a new terminal siding and involved which crews would switch trains. The agreement halted further action and set a tentative hearing for Monday, avoiding a systemwide paralysis and preserving working conditions as described by union officials.

Severe Weather Strikes Plains With Tornadoes and High Winds

Severe weather swept across the Plains on the first day of summer. The Chicago Weather Bureau logged heavy precipitation in central and northern areas while the south saw lower rainfall. Tornadoes touched down in northeastern Colorado causing property damage but no injuries. Rapid City and other locations reported significant wind and hail, with records of up to 74 mph and large hail. A Boston and Maine freight derailment near Brattleboro disrupted traffic but caused no injuries.
