In Eixaston Jam June 20 3 30 p m the British consular official F W Ramades at Santiago de Cuba suggested to Washington that a ransom might secure the prompt release of American prisoners including Lieut Hobson and his Merrimac comrades. The exact form of the proposal remains unclear.
Washington reports June 20 that a young volunteer Mariano Salva attempted to kill Captain General Blanco as he left the palace to inspect Havana earthworks. A rifle bullet struck Blanco in the calf of his left leg during the attack.
