Boston Mayor Kevin White bans carnival rides citywide following Sunday's fatal Charlestown accident. George Regan, the mayor's spokesman, said the ban remains in effect until the state enacts proper safety precautions.
Delegates of the 150th Maine Conference in Waterville decide not to take positions on abortion or amnesty. They advocate local churches studying the issues.
New Hampshire Constitutional Convention approved a line of gubernatorial succession by the five executive councilors to succeed the governor, while killing a proposal to create a lieutenant governor post. Delegates rejected a two-thirds tax referendum plan and a graduated income tax. Governor Meldrim Thomson commented on the proceedings, noting disappointment over a spending-linked tax proposal.
Boston AP report says former FBI official McCord fingered Nixon in the Watergate burglary and linked it to the plumbers operation. He urged impeachment actions and predicted more indictments while seeking a new trial over trial irregularities.
Attorneys for the Portsmouth Housing Authority and the Vaughan Hill Association reported a final agreement reached seven hours after the initial deadline. City Council will hear a $15,000 request to hire an architect for preliminary plans of a new Junior High School. The Joint Building Committee met at Little Harbour School and discussed site negotiations at Peverly Hill Road and Jones Avenue with City Manager Calvin A. Canney developing costs for 95 acres.
President Nixon, in a jovial mood, briefed about two dozen congressional leaders on his Middle East tour. He planned sessions with Senate and House leadership to outline meetings in Egypt Saudi Arabia Israel and Jordan and anticipated NATO talks in Brussels. He also would confer with the Cabinet and National Security Council about the Moscow trip before leaving for Camp David for the weekend.
Gale Thomson hosted William Durker and six friends at the governors residence as a pancake breakfast fundraiser. Durker bid aggressively at the WEN TV auction while politics flared over funding for the Gay Student Organization amid claims of campus censorship. Durker later said he bid to influence the governor’s image, revealing a personal stake in the breakfast.

Lottery Director Christo Anton defended the program amid investigations into a 240000 advertising contract with Dunn & Bold. The effort saw banks resupply and vendors extend tickets in Bangor and Portland as demand surged.
Israeli planes bombed five Palestinian refugee camps in south Lebanon as Lebanon’s Defense Ministry reported. At least four people were killed or wounded in Sidon and Tyre area including one refugee camp near Sidon. The strikes followed a guerilla raid on the Shamir kibbutz and were part of delayed retaliation.
Aide to Rep James Cleveland NH confirmed the congressman intends to seek reelection. Administrative assistant Bill Joslin said an official candidacy announcement would come in about two weeks, after the current Congress recesses in July.
