A rookie officer, John J. Madden, two months on the force, confronted three bandits at night in the Bronx as they attempted a hold up. One man struck him, but the other two were held at bay until backup arrived. The trio, William Raymond, 22, Clinton, Iowa. William Ledwigh, 24, Chicago. and P Bewley, 24, Wow. York, confessed to a spree of holdups.

An elderly bridge over the Monocacy River in Maryland collapsed while workers repaired a wooden floor, sending more than 20 people into the river.
