A car crash on Route 152 in Lee Acres resulted in a fatality when the vehicle struck a tree. The incident occurred June 29 as emergency services responded to the scene and investigated possible factors.
Graduation exercises for Portsmouth High School Class of 1956 will be held tonight at the South Playground with 209 graduates. If weather fails, ceremony moves to the Junior High School Auditorium. tickets required for reserved seating. Police report the car left the road on an Ss curve, tree impact, tree repeatedly hit in area over years. A ceremony Saturday near Hampton Beach will dedicate a 7200 foot seawall and adjacent parking project. Gov. Lane Dennellis is expected to attend along with federal state and local officials. A lobster luncheon and motorcade will precede the dedication at Ashworth U Inn and Marsh Avenue shore.
London reports indicate Britain will offer Cypriots self government plus a vote on union with Greece as rebels press for independence. The plan includes local elections for a Cypriot government while Britain would retain defense and foreign affairs. Violence continued with bombs in Nicosia and two Greek Cypriots sentenced for RAF corporal murder.
Wells residents are called to a special town meeting at the Wells High School auditorium to vote on funds for a six room addition to Wells Elementary. The warrant includes four articles covering moderator designation, additional funds of 8500, rescinding and reborrowing under a flexible plan, and rewriting Article 28 with authorization to borrow 83500 under terms in the town’s best interest.
A Portsmouth family reunion celebrated Miss Teniy Liberson’s 51 year separation from her Russia birthplace. aboard the Invacli steamship Zion, Liberson and her brother spoke through an interpreter about emigration, Zionism, and Israel’s birth. Her daughter Frances Levitt and son Leo Liberson, a Portsmouth attorney, joined the emotional gathering as Liberson expressed pride in Israel and plans to return with a three month visa.
In Rye, the Jenness Beach land dispute closes in Superior Court with final arguments deadline set for Aug 1 before Chief Justice Stephen W Wheeler. The trial began June 4 without a jury over the state’s claim to Route 1 A right of way at Jenness Beach, where four homes stand on land the state says it owns. Defendants William G Brown and Carroll J Brown contest the state’s ownership, following a Governor’s Counselor protest against alleged infringement of state rights.
William P. Donahue of Biddeford, longtime Democratic county official and former state legislator, was defeated in the primary, with Marcel Viger winning the nomination. Viger, 27, starts a law practice in Biddeford and faces Republican David Strater in September. Turnout was light with 713 Republicans and 60 Democrats in Kittery amid a broader Maine primary showing Traffion defeating Chapman and LaFleuret in a GOP sweep and Muskie poised to face Traffion in the general.
Democratic senators voiced confidence the Senate will approve an additional 1.16 billion dollars for long range bombers and Air Force spending. The Senate Appropriations Committee allowed the funds requested by President Eisenhower as debate on the defense bill continued, with party lines and leadership weighing in on the likely floor outcome.
One man died and seven others were seriously injured when staging collapsed inside a giant chimney at the Mystic plant of Boston Edison Co in Everett Massachusetts. The dead is Fred Landry 40 foreman of the inside crew. Rescue took 20 minutes as workers were pulled from the tangled mass. The job is by T J O Connor Engineering Co of Pittsburgh with Rust Engineering Co also of Pittsburgh.
