Four air base staff sergeants helped recover two drowned men in the Scuam River after a fishing boat sank near Ashland. Kenneth Messier, 27, and Edward Nelson, 29, were found in a shallow pool. After a four day heat wave, the weather bureau warned of frost risks in extreme Northern New England. A cool Canadian air mass could drop temperatures to the 40s and even into the 30s, with readings near freezing. Early, northern Maine showed lows in the 40s while Vermont and New Hampshire were in the upper 40s. Mt. Washington recorded 25 degrees before dawn.
Voter turnout in Maine primaries was light across Augusta Biddeford Portland and Westbrook. A former Portsmouth woman her husband and two children narrowly escaped harm in a bombing outside the home of John J. Sullivan a major Boston area theatrical booking agent in Medford Massachusetts. Police say two homemade dynamite packs exploded injuring Sullivan and two officers while a second bomb failed to detonate. Sullivan reports a campaign of terror including tire slashing and fuel tampering. He runs a large agency that books for 35 to 40 nightclubs and restaurants and called the attack a deliberate act against him.
An anonymous call sparked a police chase ending with the arrest of Da vid J. Langdon, 20, of Pine St, on three charges. He is held on 2090 bail for breaking into Barrett's Amoco Station and stealing a car, plus a 150 fine and sentences for DUI and driving with suspended rights. Police pursued a fleeing vehicle north of Islington St and Bartlett St, with Officers Early and T Boone assisting in the capture.
Rear Adm Albert G Mumma warned the United States must stop underestimating Soviet armament capacity. Speaking to the New England section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard he urged continued rapid development of nuclear power guided missiles and electronics. He noted about 30 guided missile ships are active or planned including a nuclear powered cruiser and a nuclear submarine under construction.
Hampton burglars ripped open a 700 pound safe and escaped with 1191 dollars from Warren's Super Market on Lafayette Road. Police Chief John J. Four year old Ann Elizabeth Marcotte died after tumbling from a cement bank while playing in a municipal park along the Lower Cowheen River. Police identified her as daughter of Mr and Mrs Wilfred J Marcotte. Playmates said she fell through an unfenced opening into the river beside the park.
