Nursing home operators led by Charles W. Ferguson of Milford oppose Gov. Powell's proposed 75 cent daily rate increase. They demand a $1.59 rise by July 1 or will refuse welfare patients. Welfare Commissioner Barry says his agency favors a $2.50 increase and disputes the governor's compromise.
City committee actions address parking lot purchase for High Hanover street property from PHA at up to 85 000 with one dollar per square foot. several traffic and parking requests referred to committees and officials including diagonal parking on Congress Street speeding near Gates Street and sewer and water line extensions. approvals include Batchelor Oil Co for two underground tanks and Rotary Club chicken barbecue set for July 2.
The seven hour long interrogation in the Meriden slaying continues with tape recordings. State troopers invited those questioned to answer questions. Among the questioned was Rev. Jack Hemenway who had previously conducted services at Meriden Congregational Church for Spalding, son of Ed.
City council wrangled over a 20 cent hourly pay boost for city yard union workers causing a split vote. McMaster supported the measure while Jervis Shaines Caswell Flynn White Guprill Margeson voted against. An additional 100 and 150 boosts were approved for staff positions, with a study committee to review the city pay scale and a master sewerage plan delayed due to the wage debate.
Police said two cars collided on Center Street injuring Leon R B Wesley 21 in Pease APB and Irene Grochmal 39 with head and knee abrasions. In Portsmouth Gladys M Sylvester 26 of Eliot and Ceferino A Javier 40 of Pease AFL collided on State Street with no injuries reported.
Ward Spalding, head of the Kimball Union Academy chemistry department, reports a freshman student has been missing since June after last being seen leaving the school gym. Private committal services were set today in Newburyport, Massachusetts, the elder Spalding's native city.
Ellsworth Maine AP Raymond Grant aged 4 a rejected suitor is charged with armed kidnapping and robbery after allegedly forcing 17 year old Nova Staples from Brooklin Baptist Church area. He fled with her in a minister candidate's car, rammed a roadblock near Orrington, injuring her slightly. Grant previously claimed the shooting was accidental.
A stream of birth notices from Hamp ton Durham Kittery Pease AFB and surrounding towns reports daughters and sons born to numerous families. Names include Seth Dunking Normand Ayotte Morton Bonn Renala Hill David Faye Curii Ricker Ford St Pierre Fernald Armstrong Henner Costen Tobin Smith Pierre McAllister and more with hospitals and addresses such as Exeter Hospital Greenland Hampton Falls and Stratham.
Seattle AP reports 41 year old Adama awoke to a burglar rifling a jewel box. She leaped from bed and chased him to a back door, shouting for help as onlookers gathered. Her daughter Diane Usher described the intruder’s startled reaction and question about clothing.
Hollywood scene reports George Reeves known as the Superman of television died from a gunshot at his Benedict Canyon home above Beverly Hills. Reeves, famous for the Superman series, apparently took his own life. critics note he struggled with limited, typecast roles as reruns circulate.
Westbrook and Portland police, state troopers, sheriff's deputies and game wardens received valor citations for bravery after a gun battle in Limerick last night. Gordon Hamilton killed during the clash. Pierre Harnois posthumously awarded a medal of valor. State Police Chief Robert Marx presented the awards.
A 23 year old sailor pleaded guilty to driving under the influence on Sagamore Avenue and was fined 140 dollars by Judge Oscar Neukom. Eimmy C Modesett, attached to the USS Aeolus, received a 60 day House of Correction sentence suspended on payment of the fine, with one year NH driving revocation. Modesett also had a second charge continued for sentence. In other cases Anthony M Calire, 22, attached to Pease AFB, was fined 10 dollars for speeding on the New Hampshire Turnpike in Greenland. A2C Robert L Ingram, also of Pease AFB, paid a 5 dollar fine for operating an uninspected vehicle on Marcy Street. AC Lealie S Shafer, 23, of Pease AFB, was fined 5 dollars for parking overnight on Market Street May 30.
Francis T. Hughes a 40 year old former Army sergeant was sentenced to 2 to 3 years in state prison on four counts of a lascivious and unnatural act involving his grove daughter in October 1957. The case was decided by Judge Thomas J. Morris after a Superior Court jury conviction. Hughes may appeal by June 30 with bail set at 3000 dollars after defense request.
An 18 year old Laconia youth died of a brain hemorrhage after a parachute jump at Ft Campbell Kentucky. Robert Andrews son of Mrs Elsie Andrews died in an Army hospital yesterday. Relatives here said the incident occurred last Wednesday.
CONCORD AP Plans for a testimonial to State Recreation Director Russell B Tobey were announced today. The affair will be held July 11 at Mt Sunapee State Park in Newbury. Tobey has completed 4 years of developing and managing New Hampshire's state parks system.
A 23 year old airman from Pease AFB pleaded guilty to being drunk in a Ladd street case Saturday and was fined 10 dollars.
Evangelist Billy Graham said in Paris he found Soviet people lacking high moral standards especially in public affection. He described clean streets and parks but noted few couples holding hands. He spoke of a spiritual hunger and insecurity he sensed, promised to pray for officials, and said he hopes to return to preach in Moscow one day.

He led the 62nd Bomb Wing from Fairchild to Guam, served at SAC headquarters as chief of the retirement division, and assumed duties in Korea in 1951 where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with clusters, and Purple Heart. He is married to Jo Beth Nelson of Shreveport Louisiana and they have three children.
A 1-year-old Manchester youth remained critically injured after a Sunday morning accident on Route 10L. The child was moved from Exeter Hospital to Eliot Hospital in Manchester by ambulance with severe head injuries and had been on the critical list at Exeter Hospital.

A $5 million civil action over control of Claremont Vaper Corp. opened before Federal Judge Alexander Holtzuff in Washington. Plaintiffs James II Malloy of Arlington and John D. Wilson of Scarsdale sue Dennis Bay Co and Claremont Paper Corp as stockholders. Bay Co responds with a $4,068,488 claim against Matty and Wilson. Case began in New York, moved to New Hampshire, and sits at Rockingham County Superior Court for convenience.
Manchester AP The contract for the first four buildings in St Anselm's College multimillion dollar expansion goes to Peerlal Corp of Framingham Mass as the low bid. Ground is to begin soon on a science building library student union and gymnasium with two dormitories to start later this summer. Completion target is September 1960.
