Portsmouth High School hosts the senior class banquet tomorrow evening at the Junior High gym. Committee members include Norman Seltzer, Keith Boss, and Anne Randall. Dinner begins at 6:30 followed by a brief speaking program.
An instructors school for those aiding James M. Culberson with his summer playground program begins at four this afternoon at the Junior High school. Culberson urged interested men to attend as sessions run each afternoon this week. The Portsmouth program promises a new approach this summer.
Concord June 14 A Minute Man flag was presented to the State Office of Price Administration signifying at least 90 percent of its employees buy war bonds through payroll deductions. The award was made by Winthrop L. Carter of Nashua, chairman of the State War Savings committee, and received by Russell B. Larmon, State OPA director.
The State Liquor Commission suspended Martys cafe beer license at 268 State Street for selling to obviously intoxicated patrons. The order, reported by a state beer inspector, follows an investigation and is described as an indefinite period, typically 10 to 15 days.
Vonn Smith of State street Forts mouth sustained a slight fracture to his left leg after walking into a slowly driven car on Daniels street. The vehicle, operated by Thomas B. Marshall of Newmarket, was headed to the Portsmouth Navy yard with two passengers when the mishap occurred. Smith was transported by police ambulance to Portsmouth hospital where he remains under treatment.
Concord announces Charles H. Willey of Concord has been installed as grand chef de gare of the New Hampshire 40 and 8, an American Legion play organization. Eli Court of Keene named grand intendent and others including Robert Blodgett of Claremont and Harold Myra of Portsmouth take senior posts as grand lampister and sous grand de la porte respectively. Retiring grand chef de gare O. Mericer of Nashua completes the list of new officers.
Heavy rains forced the abrupt cancellation of Flag Day ceremonies in a New Hampshire town. Mayor Charles M. Dale spoke before about 400 at the covered grandstand as thunder rolled, ending the events. Earlier, a flag was presented at the county courthouse with officials including Mayor Dale and County Commissioner Ira A. Brown accepting on behalf of the city and county. The parade began at 3 15 pm from the Elks home, led by Lt. Wallace S. Nelson US, a past Elks ruler, now at Camp Edwards, proceeding along Pleasant Street to Congress, Middle, Richards and Par streets.
An uneasy three way wage production stalemate over coal mining moves toward a possible climactic settlement as about 2,200 miners in Pennsylvania and Alabama end a brief walkout. They return to the pits after protests over $1 daily fines. The dispute involves John L. Lewis, the government, and coal operators.
Miss Grace Smith of York Village leaves Boston for SPARS training in West Palm Beach. Seaman Smith, daughter of Earle and Mrs. Smith, a 1940 York High graduate and 1942 Westbrook Junior College alumna, volunteered to help free coast guard friends from shore duties, enlisting in February and sworn in April after turning 20.
Boston and Maine railroad announced a manpower replacement schedule across Maine Vermont New Hampshire and Massachusetts to release about 87.4 percent of 1B and 38 subject workers within 12 months. The plan approved by Selective Service officials aims to prevent draft boards from crippling the industry by inducting key personnel. Within six months 252 workers about 70.9 percent of vulnerable staff will be available. 60 more about 16.82 percent will follow in the next six months.
Flags carried by the State Guard included the Union Jack the Pine Tree flag and the Don t Tread on Me banner along with the banners of the 19 colonies and the Confederate States. The South playground crowd began arriving at 3 pm as spectators waited for the parade. General Chairman Ira A Brown appeared at the reviewing stand in white flannels and a blue coat amid continued coverage.
The War Manpower Commission and Selective Service directors testified that a majority of physically fit fathers would be in uniform by year end as inductions start in August and reach 10.9 million total. By month’s end 9.2 million will be in service, with 300,000 monthly inductions July through December and 700,000 expected for the first half of 1944 for replacements. Hershey indicated interdiction on father inductions would continue until necessary.
Portsmouth will face a blackout Tuesday night as the State Council of Defense announces the next test. Officials say all details and times will be published in advance to clarify procedures tied to signals from the recent surprise drill.
A German broadcast reported that American planes attacked Flushing in the Netherlands yesterday morning. Flushing had been targeted by RAF daylight raiders on Sunday.
