He attended Harriet shapleign school and is survived by his parents two brothers Charles William and Carlton Freeman Parnham and sister Marjorie Loraine.
A fire of suspected origin erupted at 6:54 am on the SS Irenee Dupont tied at Fier 2 Brooklyn, burning in No 2 hatch with tire and oil cargo. Fireboats battled dense smoke, the blaze confined to a cargo area and controlled within an hour. no crew aboard at the time.
David A. Williams a Greenland resident and former Kittery man died in Portsmouth last night aged 66. Born July 17 1877 in Kittery he was married to Mari ca Pierce Williams and survived by two daughters Mrs Allen Barker of Kittery and Kenneth Fernald of Greenland, five grandchildren and two brothers Roscoe Williams of Kittery and John Williams of Minneapolis. He worked for many years at the Portsmouth Navy yard.
Thomas P. Cheney a 50 year old former New Hampshire attorney general and prominent lawyer died suddenly in his Laconia office. A Ashland native and 1938 Republican gubernatorial nominee candidate he served as major and former judge advocate in the New Hampshire National Guard and was a World War I veteran. He studied at Boston University Law School and formed a law partnership with Chief Justice Oscar L. Young after the war.
Two Gloucester draggers were sunk by a German submarine off New England. Crews of 14 men swam 65 miles to shore in 36 hours, calling the gunners very lousy shots as 40 to 50 shells sank one ship and 16 or 17 sank the other. A dog aboard Snooks perished with the vessel. Captain Joseph A. Clarmitaro led the first dragger. the second’s crew assisted after witnessing the attack.
Warren C. Brown a World War I major aged over 50 sought active duty. After rejection he offered his service pistol to the Ordnance department in Washington. A letter was received approving the pistol for service despite his age.
Superior Court staff in black robes swapped for shirtsleeves as Judge H. Thornton Lorimer fined ten gambling violators, adding more than 800 dollars to court coffers. Other actions included a reckless driving charge against John P. Bramble and a non-support order for Walter Piecouch with weekly payments to his wife and child. Various arraignments followed a February 25 slot machine raid with fines of 50 dollars and 5 dollars costs for listed individuals.
William D. Brownell aged 53 formerly of this city died this morning at Glencliff. He is survived by his mother Mrs Ancy Brownell and two brothers John L. and Robert H. Brownell all of Portsmouth.
London and Moscow pledge mutual aid to rebuild Europe under the Roosevelt Churchill Atlantic charter against Hitlerite Germany. Eden and Molotov signed May 26 at the British foreign office after three days of talks, with the United States kept fully informed. The pact, valid twenty years, prohibits entering negotiations with any German government that continues aggression. Molotov’s London visit preceded his return to Moscow.
A Flag Day program in Market square on June 14 will honor Greater Portsmouth servicemen along with their wives and mothers. Ira A. Rear Adm. Thomas Withers USN assumed command of the Portsmouth Navy Yard succeeding Rear Adm. John D. Wainwright USN who retires after over 40 years of service. The ceremony on the mall featured Marines in dress blues and officers in whites as Withers becomes the 53rd commandant since 1815. Wainwright read his orders and the flag was lowered as the new commandant took charge.
