Lowell Fire Rips Through Three Buildings

A Lowell blaze caused $200,000 damage destroying two Otis Allen buildings and a Ryan Hay & Grain Co three story structure. Twelve firefighters were hospitalized from smoke inhalation as the fire threatened the lumber and tenement district and even drew aid from neighboring towns.

Kingsford Smith flight aim for United States takeoff

Australian aviator Captain Charles Kingsford Smith and three companions expect to depart for the United States in the Southern Cross by week’s end from Dublin Ireland weather delays have postponed the start. They plan to skirt Newfoundland and may halt at Old Orchard Beach Maine if fuel runs low. Takeoff will be at about 2000 feet with strict precautions to ensure safety.

United States Rejects General Smuggling Treaty

Geneva June 11 The United States government frowns on a general treaty for suppression of smuggling. The State Department states such a pact would offer little help to the United States while noting diamonds jewelry and other small but valuable goods are the main smuggled items. Prohibition era liquor smuggling is highlighted as a separate issue, with bilateral liquor treaties already negotiated with fourteen countries allowing seizure and import under certain conditions.

Mary B Hurlihy Curley, wife of Mayor James M Curley of Boston, died at her home after years of illness.
