The forecast notes a rising trend in temperatures with winds shifting from east to south. Expect mild to warm conditions as the day progresses with variable breezes.
A Mexican army pilot, Vitbuena, flies from Mexico City on a goodwill mission toward Washington. The Mia plane consumed 526 gallons of gas after a 5000 yard run, and the pilot hopes to reach Washington in about 20 hours, expected tomorrow morning. Route planned via Tampico, New Orleans, Montgomery and Atlanta.
The Fourth Church held a colorful Children’s Day service with potted plants flowers and ornate pulpit decor. A large congregation welcomed the program led by the pastor Rev. Us. The event featured diverse department performances songs and a sermon themed on Sowings and the season’s spirit.
Children’s Day services unfolded across multiple congregations. Perfect attendance awards went to several youths, including Helen Veluce Ger and Briscia Garrett, with others earning three-year recognitions. Middle Street Free Church hosted a three-part program led by Frank C. Remlels, featuring dedication, primary and kindergarten exercises, and a character-building film in the evening.
Public fried chicken dinner served in the vestry of People's Baptist Church at Pearl and Tanover streets. Inraday Tune dath from 3 to 7 PM. Price 25 cents. Proceeds support church activities.
Curtis Field June 11 Associated Press owner Curtis A Levine of the monoplane Columbia said taking off this morning to fly to Europe was delayed due to weather reports from steamers indicating a storm along the Atlantic route. Miss Bell and two men planned the direct flight to Europe.
The Earhart crew on the Monoplane Friendship faced thick fog and southwest winds delaying their attempt to cross the Atlantic from Trepassey Newfoundland. Amelia Earhart Wilmer Stultz and Louis Gordon hoped to depart at dawn but weather unsettled plans.
Three civilian employees at the Norfolk Navy Yard were scalded to death in the No 1 roller room of the destroyer Bruce while wiring. The victims were D. H. Munden Charles Ken and Toe Toyea all mechanics from Norfolk and Portsmouth. Two crew members were scalded while attempting to aid them and were hospitalized.
Funeral services were held in Portsmouth and nearby towns for Tris bee Karen M Almas and Orren J Clough with attendance from relatives former classmates and co workers. Services were led by pastors at the North church Congregational and personal lodges and interments took place in local family plots.
In Kittery this evening two Tanoer League games sponsored by Henry Wallingford Post American Legion will start at 4 15 with the Tralp Juniors facing the Ranger Juniors and at 5 30 the Biot Scoits meet the Kittery Faint Scouts. A 7 30 meeting for all players and managers at Wallingford is planned.
The appeal urges year round giving and weekly or monthly pledges to support the Salvation Army. Portsmouth has always met its fundraising goals, and broad participation is urged to ensure the drive succeeds.
The Mayor calls removal of unsightly signs and posters and urges all residents to present neat premises ahead of summer visitors. Portsmouth aims to uphold a reputation for cleanliness and attractiveness, drawing thousands with its historical appeal and spreading a positive image nationwide. Everyone is asked to help.
With less than half the fund raised the Salvation Army reports only $1,070 toward a $3,500 budget. Due to few solicitors, readers are urged to mail contributions using pledge cards printed on the last Herald page. Checks may be made to the Salvation Army or M. Matthews-Tr.

In Orchard Grove cemetery under FT Verne Wood Thomas eldeke the funeral of James Hen way was held this morning at 10 with Seraph P. Conner of the First Church of Christ Scientist conducting the service and interment in the family plot at Center Strafford under J. Yarns Wood. William G. Rudman’s funeral followed from his 68 McDonough Street home Saturday afternoon at 1 30 with Rev Maxwell Ganter of St Johns church presiding and interment at South cemetery under William P. Miskell. Floral tributes were many. bearers included Howard Berry James Driscoll Jr Victor Ladree. The remains of John C. Arand, who died at the naval hospital, were shipped to Pittsburgh, Pa for service and interment.
The York County Rural Letter Carriers Association met at Tort McCleary Park on Kitkery Point with good attendance. County Commissioner W B Deering of Fallin Center spoke. officers elected include KE Stanley Brown president and Maysnard Clough vice president.
