A prisoner was shot as he attempted to run away from a guard at the detention facility. The incident occurred during an escape attempt and the inmate sustained injuries not described. authorities investigate the shooting and review security procedures.
Chicago June. Fort Sheridan prisoner Bad Cain is mortally wounded by Private Lawrence Dunn after Cain refused halt order while escaping. Cain, under a three year sentence with three months left, died within an hour. Cain was seen as a troublemaker at the post.
In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania on a Sunday the coal miners strike headquarters appeared deserted. Only President Mitchell and his secretary remained as other officials had returned home. Mitchell said there was nothing urgent to announce and the information he held was satisfactory. Supervisors of coal companies wandered with little to say about the strike. Some admitted firms were urgently seeking skilled workers to operate engines and pumps.
The unknown man was found floating in the Merrimac River near Manchester on June through the water for three or four days. He had a bruised head with deep wounds on the left side exposing skull and bone. Identification may hinge on a distinctive double thumb on the left hand.
Three youths William Helferich aged nineteen Alexander Wilson aged twenty one and Maurice Silver aged twenty two drowned in Long Island Sound off Hunt's Point after their small rowboat capsized. John Helferich brother of William was rescued by a sand scow crew.
The Exeter shipping scene witnessed the launching of the barge Merrill yesterday on the lower Anderson wharves. Built over a year under Stewart Russell of Portland, it measures seventy two feet and carries about 125 tons of coal. Named for Merrill Anderson, it cost over $3000 and will be towed by Henry W. Anderson’s company toward Boston.
London observes a restrained but bright Thanksgiving marking the return of peace in South Africa. King Edward and royal family attended the main service at St Pauls while crowds cheered as they moved between royal residence and cathedral, echoing widespread empire wide gratitude.

The Young Portsmouths beat the Young Manchesters fifteen to fourteen at the Plains on Saturday to claim the junior state championship. Frank Newick pitched for Portsmouth and Looney for Manchester in a rain slippery game with wild pitching and overall uneven defense. Pickard starred for Portsmouth, Kirwan made several remarkable catches, and umpire William Mitchell oversaw the decisive ninth inning rally.
The Johnson property at Greep and Pleasant streets was sold to J Albert Walker of Boston. He already owns adjoining land near Pleasant street and plans notable changes, with a new three store block rising near the city hall. Walker first came to Newburyport via the P R coal firm in Portsmouth and quickly saw value at the old engine house auction.
The adjourned annual meeting of the New Hampshire Society Sons of the American Revolution will convene in Concord at 11 15 a m June 14 in the House chamber at the state house. A historical address by Frank B Sanborn of Concord Mass will cover The Relations of New Hampshire and New Hampshire Men to the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Henry M Ba will speak on The Relations of New Hampshire and New Hampshire Men to the Battle of Bunker Hill. Rear Admiral George E Belknap is expected to attend. A banquet will follow at the Eagle hotel at 2 p m June 14 which is Flag Day.
A large school of herring appeared off Commercial wharf Sunday afternoon and local fishermen netted six or seven barrels of fish. The event stands out due to recent bait-fishing difficulties. Fred Randall, a noted hairdresser, caught a cod weighing fourteen and a half pounds while fishing near the third New Castle bridge on Sunday.
News from Meridian Mississippi reports a race riot expected in Marion a small village on the Mobile and Ohio railroad five miles north. The unrest stemmed from discovery of a fetter urging a general uprising against white residents.
Lord Kitchener reports to the war office that disarmament proceeds satisfactorily with good spirit. Up to date 4342 rifles have been surrendered. A Pretoria despatch confirms the statement and notes the staff of the former Transvaal government involved.
Descendants of Judge Henry Rust, probate judge for Strafford county before the Revolution, placed a bronze memorial tablet in the Dover probate court room at Judge Christopher H. Wells request. The inscription notes Rust born 1726 in Stratham New Hampshire and as an original Wolfeboro proprietor, named first probate judge for Strafford in 1773.
A party of eight automobilists arrived from Malden on Saturday in the largest machine ever seen in Portsmouth. The steam carriage drew crowds all day at Stoddard's stable. It is built for touring and differs from racing cars, promising comfortable seating for eight.
Secretary Moody issued instructions authorizing the senior officer at the distress scene among the islands of Pelee and Soufriere to permit scientists aboard naval vessels when their presence would not hinder rescue work.
