Concord June 7 AP Members of the State Tax Commission rush ed preparations for a 15 percent tobacco tax set to begin July 1. The tax, proposed by the administration, would levy two cents a package on 15 cent cigarettes and similar amounts on other tobacco products. Gov Murphy is expected to sign the measure which is projected to yield about 1.1 million dollars annually and reduce real estate taxes by about 2.20 per thousand. A special administrator and staff of about 10 will oversee the tax with stamps ordered for distribution to distributors and retailers. The tax bases itself on state price averages from the past two years under the new law.
The United States Navy conducted its first deep salvage operations, floating the F-4 off Honolulu in 1915, to assist in raising the ill fated Squalus off Portsmouth. Chief Gunner's Mate William S. Loughman traveled from Boston to confer with salvage ship Falcon officials as plans to wrap cables and wires progress. Ten sailors shift aboard Falcon to support the operation while the sister ship Sculpin refuels and resupplies before resuming the scene.
Ches ton J. Eshelman 22, Carlisle Pa, claimed he aimed for Mars as he rented a plane in Camden and flew from New Jersey to the Atlantic. The craft sank eight minutes after a water landing near the trawler Villanova. he said he only realized over water at dawn amid fog. He was jailed on larceny charges and faces civil aeronautics citations.

Concord June 7 API Ally John Hurley of Manchester counsel for Howard Long condemned slayer said he would appeal to Governor Murphy and his Council for clemency. Long, convicted of slaying Mark Neville Jensen 10 year old of Laconia in 1937, had final court plea turned down by the State Supreme Court. Governor Murphy has indicated he would not act in any case, urging courts to decide if Long hangs or remains for life. Turkey is encouraging shipbuilding in that country.
Large turnout for the New Hampshire Seacoast Regional Development Association summer meeting at the Hotel Ashworth Hampton Beach featured speaker W Earle Andrews of New York City, noted for Long Island parkways and Jones Beach. He stressed practical development experience, cited New York City park growth since 1994, and warned against overreliance on theory. He recounted delays from protests over tearing down a Revolutionary War hero’s house and discussed plans for a Central Park highway, urging local officials to outline clear plans and sometimes bring in outside technicians.
Nearly 69 percent of New Hampshire gate felled timber has been salvaged and owners have received over two million dollars, yet more than two hundred million board feet still lie in state woods, according to the state timber salvage advisory agency.

Seabrook voters abolished size and amount limits for clam diggers at a town meeting. Restrictions on clams over two inches and the seven barrel weekly cap were replaced to apply to any dealer, not just individuals. Former officials Wallace Randall Carroll Randall and Lucien Foote supported or commented on the changes.
Conway June 7 flames destroyed the Conway Wood Turning Co factory with an estimated loss of 10000. The fire started about 3 30 am, saving only a small office and some stock in the yards. This marks the third loss in five years for Fred Merrow who led the company through multiple reorganizations and fires.

A late night fire at a Plaistow residence started in the family garage where a car was parked. Norman Ray, 13, awakened his parents on Sweet Hill Road as flames spread to the house rear. neighbors helped move belongings while Plaistow and Newton firefighters fought the blaze using wells for water. The fire was contained to the garage and rear rooms, sparing the main house despite smoke and water damage.
In a slow inflow of orders the New York stock market edged higher with selective buying in well known specialties. Fractions to around 2 percent gains appeared near the fourth hour with advances led by American Telephone Westinghouse Union Carbide American Can Allied Chemical International Harvester and Du Pont. Also rising were U S Steel Anaconda Bethlehem General Motors and General Electric.
Howard M. Hardy of Milford is assigned to the La fayette road patrol covering Seabrook to Portsmouth. The appointment expands state police coverage in the district and places Hardy in charge of patrols across multiple coastal towns.
London June 7 AP Great Britain will send a special envoy to Moscow to accelerate talks to bring Russia into the British French front. Prime Minister Chamberlain said the envoy will be a Foreign Office civil servant not a government member. He noted Finland Latvia and Estonia oppose guaranteed aid and said Britain will join France in backing Russia fully if war comes.
Francisco Sarabia, Mexican aviator who recently set the Mexico to New York non-stop record, was killed after his plane failed on takeoff from Bolling Field. The craft, loaded with fuel, left the ground for about a mile before plunging into the Potomac River. His wife and son witnessed the tragedy as embassy staff and medical teams searched.
The 15th annual New Hampshire Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs convention will run June 23 to 25 at the Wentworth Hotel. Speakers include Mrs. Belen Kidd Thompson of Greenville Pa, national membership chair. Mrs. Marjorie Greene of Manchester, state president. and E. Mark Sullivan. Activities feature dinners, entertainment, reports, round tables on Club Dilemmas and Next Year's Program, a Portsmouth Piscataqua Club skit, and leadership addresses by Greene and Thompson.
Maurice King of Manchester and Matthew J. Gorham of Concord were named by Governor Murphy to serve on the retirement board to set up a Pension plan for fire fighters. Gorham will serve for one year and King for two years.
