A rambling discussion on the Old Mother Hubbard rhyme questions its impact on children. Participants note the proverb like lines and the doggy’s fate, acknowledging good intentions but recognizing imagination shapes what kids think. No firm stance on censoring the rhyme.
A fragmentary editorial style discourse questions whether modern educators and readers should temper Mother Goose tales with caution. It contrasts old versus new morals, praises nursery figures like Banbury Cross and cock horses, and notes a contemporary debate about tobacco imagery and reader imagination. The piece weaves in a radio schedule for Westinghouse KDKA with a June 6 lineup.
Leo Smith staged the Bellevue club boxing night in Rochester with Benny Rintz handling the show. Eddie Desautol beat Cannonpall Cote in ten rounds while Paddy Birmingham and Barney Grant drew in eight rounds. Walter Scott stopped Buddy Nichols in four, Young Cunningham stopped Young Demara in three, and Kid Duke stopped Young Dike in Sanford in three. Miss Elsie Schurman returned to Shawmuyt Bank duties in Boston after visiting her parents in Kittery.
A jumble of crossword clues and stray phrases appears, mixing definitions, partial words, and misprints. The garbled text lists vertical and horizontal hints, with scattered letter fragments and references to foods, objects, and actions, offering little coherent item beyond a chaotic puzzle clue dump.
Dr W Slipher of Loswell Observatory at Playstaff Arizona predicts Mars research will yield accurate data after recent close approach. He cites warmer temperatures and thicker atmosphere than thought, notes radiometers and interferometers help study planetary heat and size, and highlights regular canal patterns as possible artificial indicators. He cautions against final claims but stresses growing evidence for life-supporting conditions on Mars.
Associated Press report from Spokane Washington notes a new bootlegging tactic. Authorities say criminals hire chronically ill individuals to sell liquor and pressure courts with testimonies that jail would be fatal. Judge Justice Fred Morrill and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Louis Bunge corroborate concerns.
Officials note bootleggers arrested in the last month claim they are victims of widespread consumption. A typical offender shifts from minor sins to bootleg liquor, is caught with liquor on arrival, pleads for court leniency, and is released within days. Officers say fines and bribes fund their freedom.
Exeter and Andover met in the annual baseball game this afternoon. A good number of Exeter residents attended the contest held in the city.
London reports the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will erect a war memorial at Hyde Park Corner. A wounded horse and a dog will form the central figures, with a granite base and a trio of animals representing those that aided in the war. A heraldic column note adds historic context.
