Experimental plane prototype from California Institute of Technology
Professor Merrill of the California Institute of Technology reports a successful trial of a model plane at Clover Field near Venice California. The test craft weighed under 60 pounds, flew over 100 feet at 35 miles per hour and was stabilized by artificial air currents from four large motors. The 6 by 2 foot winged ship, powered by a four cylinder motorcycle engine, is to be built two months hence at Clover Field under Merrill’s supervision. The design eliminates the tailpiece, a feature he cites as reducing air resistance and improving stability compared with regular biplanes.
