PUC Mulls NET Rate Cuts for Maine Telephone Service
Augusta Maine AP Maine Public Utilities Commission weighs reducing New England Telephone and Telegraph rates for 460000 subscribers after tentatively agreeing to cut revenue by a billion dollars regulators near end of deliberations on a record high request. The panel considers trimming basic residential charges and in state long distance while some business and equipment charges could rise. The decision, supported by PUC Chair Ralph Golder and Commissioner Peter Bradford, notes Maine residents pay high rates for limited equipment. NET would shorten the initial long distance period to one minute. after that, per-minute charges apply. NET argues the cuts could deter investment and lead to inadequate revenue. A separate 17 percent rate cut for Continental Maine Telephone Co. is before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.

Maine House kills unemployment work requirement bill
In Augusta Maine the House defeated a plan to tighten job search rules for those on unemployment for 12 weeks or more. The measure would have cut benefits for workers refusing suitable jobs while critics warned it would force high paid workers into low or part time roles. The vote blocks any further action.
